Chapter 8 - The Exposure

The emergency meeting with OmniCorp and Global Freight was held at the Ellis Logistics boardroom on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. The representatives from both multi-billion-dollar corporations looked stern and impatient, sitting across from Nora and Victoria Vance.
"Mrs. Ellis," the lead representative from OmniCorp, a harsh man named Mr. Henderson, spoke up. "We cannot have our supply chain managed by a company plagued by public scandal. The allegations made by Mr. Ward’s legal team suggest your family used fraudulent means to seize control. Unless you can provide absolute clarity, we are invoking our moral turpitude clause and terminating our partnership."
Before Nora could answer, the boardroom doors flew open.
Evan Ward stepped inside, flanked by his lawyer, Marcus Flint. Evan looked smug, wearing a brand-new suit, confidence radiating from him for the first time in weeks.
"Good afternoon, gentlemen," Marcus Flint announced, flashing a predatory grin at the corporate reps. "I apologize for the intrusion, but we felt it was vital that you hear the truth before making any decisions. My client, Mr. Ward, is prepared to offer a settlement that reinstates him as CEO, immediately clearing up this unfortunate legal dispute and securing your contracts."
Mr. Henderson looked at Evan, then at Nora. "Mrs. Ellis, what is the meaning of this?"
Nora didn't look panicked. Instead, she quietly pressed a button on her desk phone. "Bring them in, please."
The side doors of the boardroom opened, and three individuals walked in wearing dark suits and official government badges pinned to their lapels.
"Mr. Evan Ward?" the leading agent asked, stepping past Marcus Flint.
Evan’s smug smile vanished. "Yes? Who are you?"
"Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes Division," the agent announced, producing an arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, tax evasion, and violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act regarding illegal offshore transactions through a shell company known as Vanguard Holdings."
The room fell into a stunned silence. Marcus Flint stepped back, his face instantly shifting from predatory to defensive. "Agents, my client has no knowledge of—"
"Save it for the arraignment, Counselor," the agent interrupted, stepping forward and pulling Evan’s hands behind his back. The sharp clink of handcuffs echoed through the quiet boardroom.
Evan panicked, looking at the OmniCorp representatives, then at Nora. "Nora! What did you do? Nora, please! Tell them it's a mistake!"
"It's not a mistake, Evan," Nora said, her voice echoing with total authority. "You thought you were clever by hiding money from me. You forgot that when you steal from your own company, you leave a paper trail. My forensic accountants found the Vanguard Holdings wire transfers three days ago and handed them directly to the authorities."
Sylvia, who had been waiting in the lobby downstairs, came rushing into the boardroom after hearing the commotion. When she saw her son in handcuffs, she let out a horrified shriek. "Evan! What is happening? You can't arrest him! He's a Ward!"
"Mrs. Sylvia Ward?" another agent stepped forward. "You are also named in the indictment as a co-conspirator for signing the fraudulent corporate tax returns."
Sylvia froze, her face turning an ash-gray color as the second pair of handcuffs came out. She looked at Nora, her eyes wild with terror, begging for mercy she had never shown to anyone else. "Nora... please... think of Sophie! We are her family!"
"You stopped being her family when you threw her toys into a trash bag and left her to freeze," Nora said, her voice colder than the Christmas Eve snow. "Take them away."
As the FBI agents escorted a weeping Sylvia and a broken Evan out of the building in front of flashing news cameras, Nora turned back to the corporate representatives from OmniCorp and Global Freight.

"Now, gentlemen," Nora said, sitting down and smoothing her dress. "As you can see, the problematic elements of this company have been permanently removed. Ellis Logistics is fully compliant, transparent, and under new, stable leadership. Do we want to discuss the restructuring of your shipping routes, or should we talk about expanding your contracts?"
Mr. Henderson stared at Nora for a long moment, a slow grin of respect spreading across his face. "Mrs. Ellis... I think we are going to do excellent business together."
