Chapter 7 - Restructuring and Retaliation

The transition of power at the newly renamed Ellis Logistics was not without its hurdles. Evan had left the company's books in a chaotic state, having funneled millions into risky overseas expansions to hide cash from what he anticipated would be a standard divorce proceeding.

Nora moved into the CEO office on the top floor, replacing Evan’s gaudy decorations with clean, modern furniture. She brought in a team of independent forensic accountants, recommended by her father’s military contacts, to comb through every transaction from the past three years.

Sitting at her desk late one evening, Nora looked over a spreadsheet detailing the company’s current contracts. Her phone rang. It was Victoria Vance.

"Nora, we have a situation," Victoria said, her tone professional but urgent. "Evan and his mother aren't going quietly. They’ve hired a notoriously dirty defense attorney, Marcus Flint. He just filed a counter-suit in federal court, alleging that Clause 14B was signed under duress and that your father used predatory lending practices to orchestrate a hostile takeover."

Nora leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples. "Can they win?"

"In the long run? No," Victoria answered. "The documentation is airtight. But Flint’s strategy isn't to win in court—it's to drag this out in the media, freeze your operational accounts, and destroy the company's reputation so your clients pull their contracts. He’s already leaked a distorted version of the story to the local tabloids. The headlines tomorrow are going to be ugly."

The next morning, Arthur called Nora early. "Have you seen the news, sweetheart?"

Nora opened her laptop. The front page of the city’s business journal featured a picture of her and her father, with the headline: MILITARY TYRANT AND EX-WIFE ORCHESTRATE HOSTILE TAKEOVER OF LOCAL LOGISTICS EMPIRE. The article painted Evan as a hardworking entrepreneur who had been bullied out of his own life’s work by an aggressive ex-military father-in-law using a hidden loophole.

"They're trying to control the narrative, Dad," Nora said, her voice tight. "The board members of our two biggest clients, OmniCorp and Global Freight, are already calling for emergency meetings. If they cancel their contracts, the company will go under within a month."

"Let them play their media games, Nora," Arthur said, his voice entirely calm. "In the military, we have a saying: never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake. Evan thinks he’s attacking us. He doesn't realize he’s just walking deeper into the kill zone."

"What do you mean?"

"Marcus Flint is a man who loves money more than discretion," Arthur explained. "He thinks I'm just a retired old widower. He forgot to check who I served with. One of my former executive officers is now the director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. I made a phone call yesterday morning, Nora. While Evan is busy crying to the tabloids about his company being stolen, federal investigators are looking into where he got the money for that overseas expansion."

Nora blinked in surprise. "Did they find something?"

"Oh, yes," Arthur chuckled softly. "Evan wasn't just hiding money for a divorce, Nora. He was laundering undeclared investments from a shell corporation tied to a sanctioned offshore entity. He wanted to play in the big leagues, but he didn't have the brains for it. The trap is set. Now, we just wait for him to spring it."
