Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

It was Christmas Eve once again. A year had passed since the night that changed everything. The snow fell softly outside, creating a picturesque winter wonderland, but tonight, the atmosphere inside the Ellis home was entirely different.

The living room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a massive Christmas tree. The fireplace crackled merrily, sending waves of comforting heat throughout the house. Sophie was curled up on the rug, surrounded by sheets of colorful wrapping paper, thoroughly engrossed in assembling a complex Lego set with her grandfather.

"Look, Grandpa! The castle tower goes right here!" Sophie pointed excitedly.

"Excellent tactical placement, Captain Sophie," Arthur saluted her, making the little girl giggle uncontrollably.

Nora stood by the window, holding a warm mug of cocoa, watching them with a profound sense of gratitude. She wore a comfortable, elegant sweater, her eyes bright and filled with a peace she hadn't known for years.

Suddenly, the front doorbell rang.

Nora walked over and opened it. Standing on the porch was Thomas Vance, Victoria Vance’s younger brother and the chief operating officer Nora had hired to help her run Ellis Logistics. Over the past six months, their professional relationship had blossomed into a deep, genuine romance built on mutual respect, shared laughter, and a profound understanding of each other’s values.

Thomas smiled, shaking the snow off his coat. He held a beautifully wrapped box in his hands and a bouquet of winter roses. "Merry Christmas Eve, Nora."

"Merry Christmas, Thomas," Nora smiled warmly, stepping aside to let him in. "Come inside out of the cold."

Thomas walked into the hallway, immediately greeted by a joyful shout from Sophie, who ran over to hug his knees. "Thomas! Look at my castle!"

"Wow, Sophie, that looks indestructible," Thomas laughed, kneeling down to hand her a small present from his pocket. He then stood up, greeting the Colonel with a respectful nod and a firm handshake, which Arthur returned with a warm approval that spoke volumes.

Later that evening, after Sophie had been tucked safely into her warm bed, dreaming of sugarplums, and Arthur had retired to his study to read, Nora and Thomas sat together on the sofa by the dying embers of the fire.

Thomas reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He looked at Nora, his eyes filled with an unshakeable sincerity.

"Nora, from the moment I met you, I’ve been in awe of your strength, your grace, and the beautiful world you've built for your daughter," Thomas said softly, opening the box to reveal a stunning, simple emerald ring. "I don't ever want to hold you back or change who you are. I just want to stand by your side, protect you, and love you for the rest of my days. Will you marry me?"

Nora looked at the ring, then up at Thomas. She thought about the woman who had walked through the snow a year ago—scared, abandoned, and broken. She looked at herself now—a powerful CEO, a protected daughter, a loving mother, and a woman who was truly, deeply loved.

"Yes, Thomas," Nora whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face as he slid the ring onto her finger. "Yes, absolutely."

They held each other close as the clock struck midnight, welcoming Christmas Day. The storm had long since passed, leaving behind a brilliant, beautiful new dawn, and Nora knew that no matter how cold the world outside could get, her fire would never be put out again.
