Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Matriarch

"You have exactly twenty minutes to pack one suitcase," Lauren said, her tone as clinical as a surgeon's scalpel. "An escort will accompany you inside to ensure you take only your personal clothing. Anything else left behind will be itemized and handled by my legal team."
"Lauren, please!" Margaret cried, the arrogance completely draining from her face, leaving her looking old, fragile, and utterly defeated. "You can't do this to me. I'm Ethan's mother! Where is Ethan? Ethan!"
As if on cue, a taxi pulled up to the curb just outside the military perimeter. The door flung open, and Ethan stumbled out, his tie undone, his face pale and haggard. He had been called by the police department at his office an hour prior, and his mind was still reeling from the shock.
"Mom!" Ethan yelled, running past the police barricade. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Lauren.
His jaw dropped. He had known his wife worked for the Department of Defense. He had known she traveled to Washington occasionally. But she had always told him she was a "logistics coordinator." Seeing her now, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a three-star general, flanked by soldiers who saluted her as she turned her head, left him completely speechless.
"Lauren..." Ethan whispered, his eyes scanning the silver eagles on her shoulders. "You're... you're a Colonel?"
"I am, Ethan," Lauren said gently, though her stance remained professional. "I wanted to tell you the full depth of my work, but my assignments in cyber-warfare and strategic intelligence are classified under Title 10 of the United States Code. I was legally barred from sharing my rank with anyone outside my direct command chain until this morning, when my security clearance was temporarily adjusted to handle a direct domestic threat."
"A threat?" Ethan looked at his mother, who was now weeping openly, clutching the doorframe.
"She threw boiling water on me, Ethan," Lauren said simply, lifting her arm to show him the heavy medical wrapping. "She burned me, called me a useless beggar, and threw me out of my own home. The home I bought with my own money three years before I ever met you."
Ethan turned to his mother, his face twisting from confusion to deep, burning betrayal. "Mom... is this true? Did you burn her?"
"She was keeping secrets!" Margaret wailed, trying to deflect. "She lied to us, Ethan! She made you look like a fool! She was living in this big house pretending to be a nobody while she was secretly rich! She was mocking us!"
"She wasn't mocking us, Mom," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a whisper of pure disgust. "She was serving her country. And she was protecting me by keeping me out of classified business. And you... you burned my wife?"
"Ethan, I'm your mother! You have to support me!"

"Officer," Ethan said, turning away from Margaret with tears in his eyes. "Please. Escort her out of my wife's house."
Margaret let out a horrific shriek of despair as the two local police officers stepped up the porch steps, gently but firmly grasping her arms. The neighbors, who had all crawled out onto their porches to watch the spectacle, whispered and pointed as the neighborhood's self-proclaimed queen was led down the driveway in her pajamas, handcuffed, and placed into the back of a police cruiser.
