Chapter 4 - The Legal Siege

By Monday morning, the legal battle had begun in earnest.

Margaret had been released on bail, paid for by her wealthy older brother, Richard, a prominent real estate mogul in the state. Richard, unlike Margaret, was not an idiot. He understood the gravity of the situation immediately when he saw the police report and the military involvement.

Inside the glass-paneled conference room of Vance & Associates, Lauren sat opposite Richard and his high-priced defense attorney, Harold Sterling. Ethan sat beside Lauren, his hand firmly holding hers.

"Colonel Hayes," Sterling began, offering a tight, professional smile. "My client, Margaret Hayes, is deeply remorseful for the... accidental spill that occurred in the kitchen. She was under immense stress due to her housing transition. We would like to offer a settlement. We will pay for all medical expenses, plus a generous sum for pain and suffering, in exchange for the immediate dismissal of the criminal charges and the lifting of the restraining order."

David Vance, Lauren's attorney, laughed—a dry, humorless sound.

"An accidental spill, Mr. Sterling?" David pulled out a tablet and tapped the screen, turning it toward them. "This is high-definition footage from the kitchen’s smart-fridge camera. As you can see, Margaret Hayes deliberately lifts the kettle, targets Colonel Hayes' shoulder, and hurls the water with clear intent to cause grievous bodily harm. She then stands over her, shouting insults."

Richard’s face darkened as he watched the footage. He shot a furious glare at his sister, who was sitting in the corner of the room, looking smaller than ever.

"Furthermore," David continued, "because Colonel Hayes is an active-duty officer handling critical national security assets, this assault constitutes an interference with military readiness. If we take this to federal court, your client is looking at a mandatory minimum of five years in a federal penitentiary."

"What do you want, Colonel?" Richard asked, ignoring his lawyer and looking directly at Lauren. "You're a powerful woman. You've clearly won this round. Name your price to make this go away."

Lauren leaned forward, her silver eagles catching the light. "I don't want your money, Richard. I make plenty of my own. Here are my terms: First, Margaret signs a permanent, irrevocable restraining order. She is never to come within five hundred yards of me, my husband, or my property."

"Agreed," Richard said immediately.

"Second," Lauren continued, "she will sign a comprehensive non-disclosure agreement. If she ever utters a single word about my rank, my military affiliation, or my household to any third party, including social media, she will forfeit her entire retirement portfolio to a military veterans' charity."

Margaret gasped. "My retirement?! Richard, you can't let her—"

"Shut up, Margaret," Richard snapped. He looked back at Lauren. "And the third term?"

"Third," Lauren said, her eyes turning to Ethan before looking back at Margaret. "She will confess, on a signed legal affidavit, to the physical and emotional abuse she inflicted on me over the past year. This affidavit will be kept on file. If she ever violates the restraining order, it will be entered into public record."

"You are destroying my life!" Margaret sobbed. "Ethan, please! Speak to her! I'm your mother!"

Ethan looked at his mother, his expression completely cold. "You stopped being my mother the moment you tried to disfigure my wife. Sign the papers, Mom. Because if you don't, I will personally testify against you in court."
