Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

With the trial behind them and the threat of Iron Talon neutralized, the dust finally began to settle over Oakridge Estate.
The house was quiet again, but it was no longer a place of tension and secrets. It was a home.
Lauren had transitioned to a senior advisory role at the Pentagon, allowing her to work from home permanently without the need for intense operational secrecy. Her true rank was now a matter of public record, and the community of Oakridge had rallyed around her, treating her with the immense respect she had earned.
Ethan had used the trust fund Lauren had built for him to finally open his own engineering firm, Hayes & Associates. His business was thriving, his confidence restored.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the couple sat on their back porch, watching the sunset over the trees.
"I still can't believe how much has changed in a year," Ethan said, pouring Lauren a glass of wine. "This time last year, I was working sixty hours a week, feeling stressed about money, and constantly trying to mediate between you and my mother. I felt like I was failing at everything."
"You never failed, Ethan," Lauren said, leaning her head against his shoulder. "You were a loving husband who was trying to do the right thing for his family. You just didn't have all the facts."
"Well, I have them now," Ethan smiled, kissing the top of her head. "And I'm never letting them go. I'm married to a Colonel. I have to keep my boots shined."
Lauren laughed, a warm, genuine sound that had been missing from the house for far too long. "Your boots look fine, soldier."
"So," Ethan said, his eyes turning serious as he looked at her. "What's next for us? Now that the world knows who you are, and we don't have any more secrets?"
"Next," Lauren said, a soft, beautiful smile spreading across her face as she placed his hand over her stomach. "We start our own family. A real family. Built on truth, respect, and love."

Ethan’s eyes widened, tears of joy filling them as he realized what she was saying. "Are you...? We're...?"
"Yes, Ethan," Lauren whispered. "We're having a baby."
