Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

At 8:00 AM sharp the following morning, Theodore walked into the top-floor offices of Sterling & Vance in downtown Lexington. Margaret remained at the apartment with Elise and the children, bringing in a team of private organizers and caterers to restock the kitchen and restore a sense of dignity to the household.

Arthur Sterling, a sharp-eyed man in his sixties with silver hair and a tailored suit, gestured for Theodore to sit. On the wide mahogany desk were three thick leather-bound binders marked with corporate seals.

"Theodore," Arthur began without preamble, "what I’m about to show you is severe. If Nathan weren't your son, I would have already referred this file directly to the State Attorney General's White Collar Crime Unit."

Theodore sat down, his hands resting heavily on his gold-headed walking stick. "Tell me everything, Arthur. Don't spare me a single detail."

Arthur opened the top binder. "Nine months ago, Nathan forged your signature on a corporate resolution for Sinclair Enterprises—the parent company you handed him thirty percent control over when you retired five years ago. Using that forged resolution, he pledged the family’s ancestral property—including the three-hundred-acre estate in Woodford County and the Lexington residential house where Elise thought she was moving—as collateral for a private equity loan."

Theodore’s jaw tightened. "Four million dollars. Where did the money go?"

"It didn't go into construction," Arthur said, turning a page packed with bank routing numbers. "It was funneled through a web of offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands before landing in the corporate reserve of a newly registered entity called Apex Horizon LLC."

"Who owns Apex Horizon?"

Arthur slid a color photograph across the desk. It was a surveillance photo taken outside a luxury restaurant in downtown Louisville. It showed Nathan, dressed in a bespoke thousand-dollar suit, laughing alongside a glamorous, sharply dressed woman in her late thirties.

"Her name is Victoria Vance," Arthur explained. "She’s a high-stakes real estate speculator with two bankruptcies attached to her name. Nathan hasn't just moved into a penthouse with her—he’s partnered with her to buy up distressed commercial properties in Florida. He used your family estate and his children's trust funds to bankroll her high-risk ventures."

Theodore stared at the photograph of his son. The boy he had raised, the boy he had taught to honor his word and protect his family, looked like a complete stranger.

"The trust funds..." Theodore’s voice cracked slightly. "He touched Ethan and Lily's college funds?"

"Drained them completely three months ago," Arthur confirmed gravely. "He presented forged power-of-attorney documents claiming Elise was mentally incapacitated and unable to co-manage the accounts."

Theodore closed his eyes for a long, heavy moment. When he opened them, the sorrow had completely evaporated. In its place was a terrifying, absolute clarity.

"Arthur," Theodore said quietly. "Activate the emergency clawback provision in the original Sinclair Family Charter."

Arthur paused, looking at his old friend with concern. "Theodore... if we execute that clause, it triggers an immediate receivership. It will freeze every personal asset Nathan holds, force his luxury condo into foreclosure, and strip him of his corporate title instantly. He will be utterly ruined."

"He ruined a fifteen-year-old boy's future and left an eight-year-old girl in an unheated apartment," Theodore said, standing up to his full height. "He is no longer my son until he repays every tear my wife and daughter-in-law have shed. Execute the clawback."
