Chapter 7 - The Final Legal Reckoning

Promptly at 8:55 AM the next morning, the elevator doors opened at Sterling & Vance.

Nathan walked out. He looked unrecognizable. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, wearing an unironed shirt he had pulled from his suitcase. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in a week.

He was escorted into the large main board room.

Sitting on one side of the mahogany table was Elise, dressed in a sharp navy blazer, flanked by Arthur Sterling and her own court-appointed domestic advocate. On the other side sat Theodore and Margaret.

Nathan took a seat at the far end of the table, his hands shaking slightly as he pulled out a cheap pen.

"Let's get this over with," Nathan muttered, refusing to look Elise in the eye.

Arthur Sterling slid a thick packet of legal documents across the table. "This is the comprehensive dissolution agreement, Mr. Sinclair. Let me summarize the terms for the record."

Arthur began reading through the clauses with surgical precision:

Full and immediate dissolution of marriage.

Sole legal and physical custody of Ethan and Lily Sinclair granted exclusively to Elise Holloway.

Complete forfeiture of all claims to the Lexington residential property, which is now transferred free and clear to Elise.

Surrender of all corporate shares in Sinclair Enterprises, transferred into the children's trust.

A court-mandated restitution judgment of $1.2 million to be paid back to the Sinclair Family Estate over fifteen years through wages garnished from any future employment.

When Arthur finished, the room was dead silent.

Nathan stared at the papers, his jaw trembling. "I won't have anything left... I’ll be bankrupt."

"You are young enough to work, Nathan," Margaret spoke up, her voice surprisingly gentle, yet unyielding. "You can get a job, rent a modest apartment, and learn what hard work and accountability actually mean. Perhaps in ten years, if you prove you have changed, your children will consent to speak to you again."

Nathan looked up at his mother, then at his father, and finally at Elise.

For the first time, he saw the absolute unity standing against him. There were no loopholes left to exploit. No lies left to tell. No safety net to catch him.

With a trembling hand, Nathan clicked his pen and signed his name on every marked line.

When he finished the last page, Arthur took the documents, stamped them with a official notary seal, and nodded to the court runner waiting by the door. "The documents are filed. The divorce is final."

Nathan stood up slowly. He looked at Elise for a long moment. "Elise... I'm..."

Elise held up a hand, stopping him before the hollow apology could leave his lips. "Don't say it, Nathan. Don't waste your breath. Just go rebuild your life, and leave us to live ours."

Nathan turned around and walked out of the conference room, his footsteps fading slowly down the carpeted hallway until the elevator doors slid shut behind him.
