Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Penthouse

The glass-and-steel tower
of the Grandview Residences in Louisville gleamed under the late afternoon sun.
Nathan Sinclair stood in his living room, pouring a glass of aged scotch while looking out over the river. The penthouse was filled with Italian leather furniture, marble countertops, and abstract art pieces worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Beside him, Victoria Vance was typing furiously on her tablet. "Nathan, the earnest money deposit for the Miami resort deal is due by 5 PM. Why hasn't your family trust transfer cleared yet?"
Nathan chuckled softly, taking a sip of his drink. "Don't worry about it, babe. My dad’s accountant is just slow. The old man doesn't check the quarterly reports anyway. He thinks I'm using the funds to pay off contractors in Lexington."
"And your ex-wife?" Victoria asked casually, without looking up. "Has she signed the quitclaim deed on the Lexington house yet?"
"Elise will sign whatever I put in front of her," Nathan scoffed, waving his hand dismissively. "She has no money, no lawyer, and no options. I've got her completely boxed in. A couple more weeks in that rundown apartment, and she’ll accept whatever crumbs I throw her way just to pay rent."
Before Victoria could reply, the heavy double doors of the penthouse burst open with a loud, echoic chime.
Nathan turned, scowling. "What the hell? I told the concierge—"
He stopped dead in his tracks.
Walking through the foyer was Theodore Sinclair, accompanied by two uniformed county deputies and Arthur Sterling. Behind them walked Margaret, wearing a tailored black coat, her eyes cold as flint.
"Dad?" Nathan choked out, setting his scotch down so quickly it spilled across the white marble counter. "Mom? What... what are you doing here? How did you get up here?"
"The concierge was remarkably helpful once we presented a court injunction signed by a Superior Court Judge," Arthur Sterling stated dryly, pulling a stack of legal notices from his leather briefcase.
Nathan’s face drained of color. He looked at his mother, offering a desperate, strained smile. "Mom! Look, there's been a huge misunderstanding. I was going to call you this weekend—"
"Save your lies, Nathan," Margaret cut in, her voice ringing through the lofty room with absolute disgust. "We went to the apartment. We saw Elise. We saw Ethan. We saw Lily."
Nathan’s expression shifted instantly. The charming facade melted away, replaced by a dark, defensive sneer. "Mom, you don't know the whole story! Elise was driving me crazy! She didn't support my business ambitions! I had to make a change for my own life!"
"By starving your children?!" Margaret shouted, her voice breaking. "By letting your daughter sleep in a room with peeling paint while you drink fifty-dollar scotch in a penthouse?!"
"I was going to give them money once the Miami deal closed!" Nathan yelled back, turning his gaze toward Theodore. "Dad, tell them to leave! This is a private corporate matter! You gave me control of Sinclair Construction!"
Theodore took three slow, deliberate steps forward, stopping inches from his son. He didn't raise his voice, but the weight behind his words made the entire room freeze.
"I gave you stewardship, Nathan," Theodore said softly. "You confused it with ownership. As of 9:00 AM this morning, the Board of Directors of Sinclair Enterprises met in an emergency session. You have been removed as CEO. Your corporate credit cards have been canceled. Your accounts are frozen. And this penthouse—which was leased using a fraudulent corporate shell company—is being surrendered to the landlord by sunset today."
Victoria Vance gasped, standing up instantly. "What?! Nathan, you told me you owned this building!"
Nathan stared at his father in absolute terror. "Dad... you can't do this to me! I'm your son!"

"My son died nine months ago when he abandoned his family," Theodore said coldly. "Officers, please serve Mr. Sinclair with his temporary restraining order and the civil fraud summons."
The deputies stepped forward, slapping the thick white documents directly into Nathan’s chest.
