Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

"I’d like to report an attempted murder, extortion, and military document forgery," Arthur spoke into the phone, his voice steady as steel.
Victoria’s face drained of all color. The polished, aristocratic facade she had maintained for decades dissolved in a single heartbeat. "Arthur! Put that phone down this instant!" she gasped, her voice cracking with desperation. "I am your mother! I did this for you! For this family! That woman is a commoner, a nobody who seduced you and tried to ruin the Vance legacy!"
Arthur didn’t even blink. He gave the dispatcher our full address, described the hot iron on the floor, the forged military casualty notice, and the forced custody agreement, then ended the call.
He stepped between Victoria and me, shielding my trembling body with his broad, dust-covered frame. The scent of gunpowder, dried mud, and clean pine clung to his uniform—a stark contrast to the stifling scent of white lilies and warm metal in the kitchen.
"Arthur... please," I whimpered, my hands tightly clutching my eight-month pregnant belly. My baby girl kicked hard against my ribs, as if reacting to the intense surge of adrenaline rushing through my veins. "She... she told me you were buried in an unmarked grave. She showed me the letter..."
Arthur knelt in front of me, his harsh military demeanor instantly melting away as he looked into my tear-filled eyes. He reached up, his rough, calloused hands gently framing my face. "I'm here, Clara. I'm right here. I never died. I was trapped behind enemy lines after an ambush, but I fought my way back to you. I'm so sorry I took so long."
Victoria lunged forward, her expensive silk blouse rustling wildly. "She's lying to you, Arthur! Look at her! She's hysterical! She's been having meltdowns for months! Ask the doctor! I hired a private specialist to evaluate her!"
"You hired a doctor to drug her, Mother," Arthur said, standing up and turning to face her with a gaze so cold it could freeze fire. "Do you think I came straight here without checking my messages? Do you think I didn't notice that all my emails to Clara were bouncing back? Or that my bank accounts were locked under your emergency power of attorney?"
Victoria stammered, stepping back until her spine hit the mahogany dining table. "I... I was protecting the estate!"
"You were stealing," Arthur corrected sharply. "And you were trying to steal my child."
Outside, sirens began to wail in the distance, their high-pitched cries piercing the quiet evening neighborhood. Victoria’s eyes darted frantically toward the front door, then toward the back porch. For the first time, she looked like a trapped animal.
"You won't get away with this," she hissed, her voice dropping an octave into something dark and malicious. "Do you really think the police will take the word of a shell-shocked soldier and his unstable wife over mine? I own this town, Arthur. Judge Miller dines at my table. The Chief of Police is on my charity board. You have nothing."
"I have the truth," Arthur said softly. "And unlike you, Mother, I don't need lies to win a war."
Two police cruisers pulled into the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing rhythmically through the kitchen window, illuminating the crushed white lily petals on the floor. Within minutes, two officers stepped into the room, their hands resting cautiously on their holsters.
"Captain Vance?" the lead officer asked, recognizing Arthur's rank and uniform. "We received a call regarding domestic violence and a forged military document."
"Officer Davis," Arthur said, recognizing the officer. "Look at the floor. That iron is still plugged in, lying inches from where my pregnant wife was sitting. Look at the table. Those are forged military death notifications and illegal custody surrender papers drafted by my mother, Victoria Vance."
Officer Davis looked at the iron, then at the documents, and finally at Victoria. The elder Mrs. Vance drew herself up, adjusting her diamond brooch. "Officer, this is a family misunderstanding. My son has severe PTSD from his recent tour, and his wife is suffering from severe prenatal psychosis. I was simply trying to secure the safety of my unborn grandchild."
"She threatened to burn my baby out of me if I didn't sign!" I sobbed, unable to hold back the torrent of emotion any longer. "She forged my husband's death notice! She told me he died in a ditch!"
Officer Davis's expression hardened. He walked over to the table, picked up the casualty notice using a pair of gloved hands, and examined it. "This seal is fraudulent. And this isn't standard Department of Defense paper." He turned to his partner. "Handcuff her."
"How dare you!" Victoria shrieked as the second officer grabbed her wrists. "Do you know who I am?! You will lose your job for this! Arthur, tell him to stop! ARTHUR!"
As the officers escorted a screaming Victoria out of the house, the silence that followed was deafening. Arthur turned back to me, pulling me into a gentle, protective embrace. I buried my face in his chest, sobbing violently as the terror of the past few months finally began to wash away.

"It's over, Clara," he whispered, kissing the top of my head. "I swear to you, it's over."
But as I looked out the window and saw Victoria being shoved into the back of the police car, her eyes locked onto mine with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. I knew in my heart that this wasn't the end. It was only the opening salvo of a war.
