Chapter 4 - The Storm Breaks

Panic erupted in the house.

"She's going into labor!" Arthur yelled, picking me up in his arms without hesitation.

"I'm calling the hospital!" Sarah said, grabbing her phone. "Make sure you go to St. Jude’s—it’s outside Judge Miller’s immediate jurisdiction!"

Arthur carried me to his SUV, placing me carefully in the passenger seat while Sarah followed in her own car. The contractions were coming faster and harder, sharp bolts of agony that tore through my body. The stress of the past twenty-four hours had triggered premature labor.

As Arthur sped through the city streets, his phone rang on the dashboard display. It was an emergency alert from our home security system.

"Arthur, look!" I cried, pointing at the dashboard screen.

The live security camera feed from our house showed two dark vehicles pulling into the driveway. Men in black tactical gear stepped out, accompanied by Nurse Evelyn and a man holding a clipboard—a court bailiff.

"They brought an emergency court order," Sarah said over the speakerphone, following closely behind us in her car. "Cross must have fast-tracked a temporary custody and hold order from Judge Miller the moment he left your house!"

"They're too late," Arthur growled, stepping on the gas. "We're almost at the hospital."

"They won't stop at the house, Arthur!" Sarah warned. "If Judge Miller signed that order, the bailiff will trace Clara to the hospital. They will try to seize the baby the moment she is delivered!"

Tears of rage and terror streamed down my face. "They can't take my baby! Arthur, please don't let them take her!"

"Nobody is taking our daughter," Arthur said, his voice echoing with unbreakable resolve. He hit the steering wheel button, dialing his friend Marcus again. "Marcus! I need a military escort and medical security at St. Jude’s Hospital right now! My wife is in premature labor, and my mother is attempting an illegal abduction using a corrupted civil order!"

"Say no more, Captain," Marcus replied over the line. "I'm deploying the base Military Police unit for high-profile soldier family protection. We'll be there in ten minutes."

When we arrived at St. Jude's Emergency Room, Arthur carried me inside. Nurses and doctors rushed forward with a wheelchair, wheeling me straight into the delivery room. The pain was overwhelming, each contraction feeling like my body was being ripped apart, but the psychological terror of losing my child was far worse.

Within twenty minutes, as the medical team prepared me for delivery, the doors to the maternity wing slammed open.

Through the glass windows, I saw Julian Cross, Nurse Evelyn, and two county sheriffs holding official paperwork. They were demanding entry to the delivery room.

"You cannot enter this room!" the head doctor shouted, standing in front of the doors. "This patient is in active labor!"

"We have a signed court order from Judge Miller granting temporary emergency custody of the infant to Victoria Vance due to maternal incompetence!" Julian Cross declared loudly, holding up a stamp-sealed document. "Step aside, Doctor, or you will be arrested for obstructing justice!"

The sheriffs stepped forward to push past the doctor.

Suddenly, a sharp, authoritative voice boomed down the hallway.

"HALT!"

A squad of six heavily armed Military Police officers, led by Captain Marcus Sterling, marched into the corridor, forming a impenetrable human wall between the sheriffs and my delivery room.

"This is a federal matter involving an active-duty Army Captain and his family," Marcus announced, drawing himself up to his full height. "Your county civil order is overridden by Military Custodial Protection Order 10-A. Step back, Counsel, or you will be detained under federal jurisdiction."

Julian Cross’s face went pale. "You can't do this! This is a state court matter!"

"Try me," Marcus replied coldly, hand resting on his sidearm.

Inside the delivery room, Arthur held my hand tightly, his eyes filled with tears as he looked down at me. "Focus on me, Clara. Only me. Our baby is safe. Push!"

With a final, agonizing scream of effort, I pushed.

The room filled with the sound of a sharp, loud, healthy cry.

"It's a girl!" the doctor announced, holding up our tiny, beautiful daughter.

Tears poured down my cheeks as they placed her warm, tiny body onto my chest. Arthur leaned down, kissing my forehead, his tears falling onto my cheek.

"She's safe, Clara," Arthur whispered, his voice shaking with intense emotion. "Our daughter is safe."

We had won the battle of her birth, but outside the room, Julian Cross was already on the phone with Victoria, planning their next deadly strike.
