Chapter 6 - The Tipping Point

Arthur slowly held up his hands, holding the black ledger in his right fingers. "You think money and control are all that matter, Victoria. But you forgot one simple rule of warfare."
Victoria frowned, her finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "What rule?"
"Never assume your enemy is alone."
Suddenly, the glass windows of the study shattered inward in a spray of deadly shards!
Flashbang grenades bounced across the hardwood floor, exploding with blinding light and deafening booms! The room filled with thick white smoke. Victoria shrieked, firing her revolver blindly into the haze—BANG! BANG!
Arthur dove behind the heavy mahogany desk, pulling his military sidearm from his holster.
State Police tactical officers poured through the broken windows and doors, their laser sights cutting through the smoke. "POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND NOW!"
Victoria’s security guards immediately threw their weapons down, putting their hands on their heads. Victoria, disoriented and blinded by the flashbang, stumbled backward, still clutching the gun.
"DROP THE GUN, VICTORIA!" Arthur's voice boomed through the smoke as he stepped out from behind the desk, his firearm aimed directly at her chest.
She blinked through the smoke, looking at her son, then at the half-dozen tactical officers surrounding her with automatic rifles. The silver revolver slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering uselessly onto the floor.
An officer tackled her to the ground, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
"Arthur Vance!" she screamed, her hair disheveled, her expensive clothes stained with glass dust and dirt. "I am your mother! You traitorous dog! I gave you life!"
"And you tried to take mine," Arthur said coldly, picking up the black ledger from the desk where he had safely placed it. "Along with my wife's and my daughter's. You're finished, Victoria."
Sarah Mercer stepped into the study, flanked by the lead investigator from the State Prosecutor's Office. She held up an audio recording device that had been live-streaming Arthur's entire encounter with Victoria directly to the police department and the District Attorney.
"We have you on tape threatening to murder an officer, confessing to corporate extortion, and admitting to drugging Clara Vance," Sarah said smoothly. "I doubt Judge Miller will be able to help you now."
The news of Victoria Vance's dramatic arrest at her estate hit the headlines by morning. The media stormed the courthouse as Victoria was dragged inside in an orange jumpsuit for her arraignment.
In court, Judge Miller looked terrified. With the District Attorney personally presenting the audio recordings, the black ledger, and the illegal Cayman Islands wire transfers, the corrupt judge had no choice but to recuse himself from the case immediately to avoid being indicted as an accomplice.
A new, impartial judge was assigned: Judge Helen Vance (no relation), known for her ironclad integrity.
At the emergency custody hearing, Judge Helen Vance looked down at Julian Cross with absolute disgust.
"Mr. Cross," Judge Helen Vance declared, her voice echoing through the courtroom, "not only is your motion for emergency custody denied, but I am revoking your license to practice in this district pending a full bar association investigation into your complicity in this kidnapping scheme."
Cross slumped into his chair, realizing his career was over.
"Furthermore," the Judge continued, looking at Clara and Arthur, who were sitting hand-in-hand at the plaintiff table, "I issue an immediate, permanent restraining order against Victoria Vance. She is to have zero contact with Clara Vance, Arthur Vance, or the newborn infant, Hope Vance."
I burst into tears of relief, burying my face in Arthur's neck. He wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight.

We had won the court battle. Victoria was behind bars awaiting trial without bail.
But as we returned to the hospital to bring little Hope home, a desperate, final trap was waiting for us in the shadowed corridors of the hospital.
