Chapter 5 - The Snake's Nest

We named her Hope.
Because despite the mountains of lies, terror, and dark schemes that surrounded her arrival into the world, she was the light that kept us fighting. She was small, weighing just under five pounds due to her premature birth, but her vitals were strong, and she was placed in an incubator in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) under twenty-four-hour Military Police guard.
Two days later, while I was still recovering in my hospital room, Sarah Mercer walked in, carrying a laptop and a thick briefcase. Her expression was dead serious.
"We have a major problem," Sarah said, placing the laptop on the bedside table. "Judge Miller has officially refused to rescind the temporary custody order. He ruled that the Military Police overstepped their authority on state land. He has scheduled a full custody hearing for tomorrow morning."
Arthur, who hadn't left my side for forty-eight hours, stood up. "Judge Miller is in Victoria's pocket. How do we break his grip?"
"We hit them where they least expect it," Sarah said, opening her laptop. "While you two were holding the line at the hospital, I had a private investigator dig into Nurse Evelyn's bank records. Guess what I found?"
She turned the screen toward us. It showed a transaction log.
"Three days before Arthur's fake death notice was presented to Clara, Nurse Evelyn received a transfer of fifty thousand dollars from an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands," Sarah explained. "The owner of that shell corporation? A company called Vance Logistics Holdings—a subsidiary controlled entirely by Victoria Vance."
"That proves bribery!" I gasped.
"It proves payment for services," Sarah corrected. "To make it stick in court, we need the actual medical logs Nurse Evelyn kept while she was drugging you. Those logs are stored at Victoria’s estate."
Arthur’s eyes filled with a dangerous resolve. "Then I'm going back to the house."
"Arthur, no!" I panicked, clutching his arm. "She has guards, lawyers—she could claim you broke in!"
"It's my house too, Clara," Arthur said gently, placing his hand over mine. "My name is on the deed alongside my father's estate. I have every legal right to enter that home. I’m going to retrieve those logs, and I’m going to end this."
That night, under the cover of a heavy downpour, Arthur returned to the grand Vance mansion—the place where he grew up, and the place where his mother had tried to destroy his life.
He unlocked the heavy oak front door using his key. The house was dark and eerily quiet. The faint scent of white lilies still hung in the air.
He moved silently down the hallway toward Victoria’s private study. The door was unlocked. He stepped inside, using a small tactical flashlight to illuminate the room. He walked behind her massive mahogany desk, opening the hidden wall safe behind the oil painting of his father—a secret code he had memorized as a teenager.
The safe clicked open.
Inside were stacks of cash, international passports, and a black leather journal. Arthur pulled out the journal, flipping through the pages. It contained detailed hand-written notes in Victoria's elegant script, detailing every dose of sedative Nurse Evelyn had administered to me, along with dates, times, and planned legal steps to declare me insane.
"Looking for something, son?"
Arthur spun around.
Standing in the doorway was Victoria, holding a small silver revolver pointed directly at his chest. Behind her stood two burly men in plain clothes—her private security detail.
"Mother," Arthur said calmly, keeping his hands visible. "You're pointing a gun at an active military officer."
"I'm pointing a gun at an intruder," Victoria corrected, a chilling smile playing on her lips. "You broke into my private residence in the middle of the night. My security team felt threatened. Tragic... the decorated war hero survives a foreign combat zone only to die in a senseless home invasion."
Arthur didn't flinch. "You really have completely lost your mind, haven't you?"
"I built this family!" Victoria shrieked, her calm facade finally cracking into pure madness. "Your father was weak! You were weak! You married a worthless little pest when you could have merged our family with the highest social circles in the country! I will not let you throw away the Vance fortune on that woman and her bastard child!"

"She is my daughter!" Arthur roared.
"She is a threat to my control!" Victoria screamed back. "Sign the transfer of corporate shares over to me right now, Arthur, or you don't leave this room alive!"
