Chapter 2 - The Sound of a Falling Empire

The expensive crystal glass slipped from Dominic’s hand, shattering against the hardwood floor of the master bedroom. The spilled champagne soaked into the rug, but he didn't even notice. The cold, mechanical voice of Dr. Alexander Reed was still echoing in his ear, followed by the terrifying finality of the text message glowing on his screen: Enjoy the family you chose.

Paige, lounging against the silk pillows in Audrey’s favorite nightgown, frowned and sat up. "Dominic, babe? What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost. Who was on the phone?"

Dominic couldn't breathe. His chest felt constricted, his mind racing through the doctor's words. Pregnant. Lost the baby. Sterile. For the past two years, his mother, Victoria, had been badgering him about continuing the family legacy, constantly blaming Audrey for their lack of children. He had taken a private fertility test a month ago just to prove a point, never expecting the results to be a biological death sentence. And Audrey... Audrey had been carrying his child when she fell down the stairs.

Suddenly, the bedroom door burst open. Victoria walked in, holding a glass of wine, her face twisted into a triumphant smile. "Dominic, darling! The security guards at the front gate just informed me that Audrey's cheap little sedan has been completely cleaned out of the driveway. She left with nothing. The pathetic little orphan finally realized she doesn't belong in a house like this. We can finally get the divorce finalized and bring Paige in properly."

Dominic turned to his mother, his face completely bloodless. "She was pregnant, Mother."

Victoria paused, her smile faltering for a fraction of a second before she scoffed. "Oh, please. She probably lied to you to get sympathy. The girl is dramatic."

"The doctor called," Dominic roared, his voice cracking with a mix of rage and horror. "She lost the baby because she fell down the stairs! The stairs you were standing at the top of, Mother! And that's not all... the test results came back. I'm sterile. I can never have children. That baby was the only chance I ever had to continue the family name, and it's gone!"

Victoria dropped her wine glass, her face turning an ash-gray color. "No... no, that's impossible. The doctors are lying! We can get a second opinion, Dominic! We can—"

Before she could finish, Dominic’s phone vibrated violently in his hand. It wasn't a text message. It was a formal automated notification from his corporate banking app.

ALERT: Operational accounts for Ward Construction Holdings have been frozen due to legal injunction. Line of credit suspended.

"What the hell?" Dominic muttered, his panic shifting to his business. He quickly opened his email. His inbox was flooded with urgent messages from his Chief Financial Officer.

Dominic, look at the emergency filings! The Vanguard Wealth Holding Group—our primary silent investor that owns sixty-two percent of our company—has just pulled all funding and issued an immediate asset freeze. They are claiming a massive breach of contract. The banks are shutting us down!

Dominic staggered backward, falling against the edge of the bed. "Vanguard... pulled the funding? But Vanguard is a multi-billion-dollar corporate entity. Why would they freeze our accounts out of nowhere?"

"Dominic, look outside!" Paige suddenly shrieked, pointing toward the large windows overlooking the grand driveway.

A fleet of sleek, black SUVs had just pulled up to the front gates of the mansion. Men in tailored dark suits stepped out, accompanied by local law enforcement officers holding official documents.

Victoria rushed to the window, her hands shaking. "Who are those people? How dare they come to my house at this hour!"

The intercom on the wall buzzed aggressively. The voice of the chief security officer came through, laced with panic. "Mr. Ward, we have a problem. The representatives from Vanguard Holdings are here with a court order. They are changing the gate codes and locking down the property. They claim the lease on this estate has been revoked, effective immediately."

Dominic grabbed his jacket, rushing down the grand marble staircase with Victoria and Paige trailing behind him. As he opened the massive oak front doors, he found himself face-to-face with Sophia Sterling, the most ruthless and powerful trust attorney in the state. Beside her stood two private security guards and a forensic accountant.

"Sophia?" Dominic stammered, recognizing her from the legal journals. "What is the meaning of this? You represent Vanguard? My company has a solid partnership with them!"

Sophia Sterling looked at Dominic with an expression of pure, professional disgust. She pulled a thick legal packet from her briefcase and dropped it into his hands.

"Your partnership with Vanguard Holdings is officially terminated, Mr. Ward," Sophia said, her voice cutting through the cold night air like a razor blade. "Vanguard Holdings is the sole corporate owner of this mansion, the vehicles you drive, and sixty-two percent of Ward Construction. And as of one hour ago, the majority shareholder of Vanguard has ordered a complete liquidation of all assets connected to your name."

"Who is the majority shareholder?" Victoria demanded, stepping forward, her voice shrill. "Tell them to call me! I know the city council! I know the mayor! You cannot kick us out of our own home!"

Sophia Sterling looked directly at Victoria, a cold, mocking smile playing on her lips. "The majority shareholder doesn't wish to speak to you, Victoria. But you know her very well. Her name is Audrey."
