Chapter 4 - The Corporate Guillotine

The next morning, the corporate headquarters of Ward Construction was in a state of absolute panic. The board of directors had called an emergency meeting, and the atmosphere in the boardroom was suffocating. Dominic sat at the head of the table, his eyes bloodshot, his suit wrinkled from sleeping in a cheap motel room.

"Dominic, explain this immediately!" the lead board member, Mr. Harrison, demanded, slamming a financial report onto the table. "Our operational capital is gone. The banks have pulled our credit lines because Vanguard Holdings issued a declaration of insolvency against your shares. We can't even pay our construction crews for the downtown project this Friday!"

"It's a temporary legal dispute," Dominic lied, his voice shaking. "My wife... we are going through a separation. She’s using a hidden trust to pressure me. I'm going to resolve it today."

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open. Sophia Sterling walked in, flanked by three forensic accountants and a man dressed in a sharp navy suit.

"You won't be resolving anything, Mr. Ward," Sophia announced, taking a seat at the center of the table, completely ignoring Dominic’s position. "As the legal representative for Vanguard Holdings, which commands sixty-two percent of the voting shares in this corporation, I am officially calling to order an extraordinary restructuring meeting."

Dominic stood up, slamming his hands on the table. "This is my company! My father’s name is on the building!"

"Your father’s company went bankrupt two years ago, Dominic," Sophia replied smoothly, sliding a document across the table to the board members. "This document details the emergency capital injection provided by Vanguard two years ago. The terms explicitly state that if the Chief Executive Officer engages in criminal misconduct, corporate fraud, or actions that severely damage the company's public reputation, the majority shareholder holds the right to immediate termination of the executive board."

Mr. Harrison read through the document, his face turning pale. He looked up at Dominic with absolute disgust. "Dominic... is it true that your mother is currently under active criminal investigation for causing the miscarriage of your wife? And that you were caught using corporate credit lines to fund an apartment for a mistress?"

"That's private property! That has nothing to do with the business!" Dominic shouted.

"It has everything to do with our public contracts," Sophia countered. "The city council just notified us that they are reviewing our multi-million-dollar downtown revitalization contract due to the public scandal surrounding your family. Therefore, Vanguard Holdings is exercising its right. Dominic Ward, you are officially terminated from your position as CEO, effective immediately. You will vacate these premises, and your corporate access badges have already been deactivated."

The board members immediately nodded in agreement, eager to save their own investments from the sinking ship. "We vote in favor of the restructuring," Mr. Harrison stated. "Dominic, leave the room before we have security escort you out."

Dominic looked around the table, seeing only cold, indifferent faces. The people who had smiled and flattered him for years were turning their backs on him without a second thought. He realized then that without Audrey’s silent, protective wealth shielding him, he was absolutely nothing. He walked out of the boardroom, his head held low, the weight of total ruin crashing down upon him.
