Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The silence that followed Sophia’s declaration was absolute. Dominic stared at the lawyer, his brain refusing to process the words. "Audrey? My Audrey? The girl who grew up in an orphanage? The girl who wore dresses from thrift stores? You’re lying. She doesn't have a penny."
"Your Audrey," Sophia corrected him coldly, "is the sole heir to the Whitmore Private Trust, valued at eighty million dollars. Her late father built the foundation of the very holding firms that rescued your pathetic, failing construction company two years ago. She hid her wealth because she foolishly believed you loved her for who she was, not what she owned. She tolerated your mother’s insults and your arrogance because she wanted a real family. But you threw that family away tonight."
Paige backed up a step, her eyes wide with sudden terror. "Dominic... what is she saying? The company... the house... it's all hers?"
"Everything," Sophia said, checking her gold watch. "The luxury SUV parked in the garage is leased under Vanguard. The corporate cards in your wallet are funded by Vanguard. You have exactly ten minutes to pack your personal clothing into suitcases. Anything else—the artwork, the furniture, the jewelry purchased with corporate funds—remains the property of the holding group. If you are still on this property at 10:15 PM, you will be arrested for criminal trespass."
"You can't do this!" Victoria screamed, her face turning a dangerous shade of purple. "I built this family's social standing! I won't be thrown into the street like trash!"
"You stood at the top of the stairs and watched a pregnant woman fall, Victoria," Sophia whispered, stepping closer, her voice dropping to a terrifying pitch. "You should be glad I'm only throwing you into the street. If the police investigation goes the way I intend it to, your next home will be a state penitentiary."
For the next ten minutes, the grand Ward mansion was a scene of chaotic humiliation. Dominic, Victoria, and Paige franticly stuffed their clothes into plastic bags and mismatched suitcases under the watchful eyes of private security guards. Dominic tried to call Audrey’s phone a hundred times, but the line was completely dead. She had vanished into the shadows, leaving behind a legal avalanche that was crushing everything he had ever built.

By midnight, Dominic, his mother, and his mistress stood at the curb outside the massive iron gates of the estate, surrounded by their luggage. The security team clicked the gates shut, the heavy iron bars locking into place with a definitive, mechanical thud. The lights inside the mansion flickered off, leaving them standing in the dark, cold night.
Dominic looked at his mother, his eyes filled with a sudden, burning resentment. "This is what you wanted, Mother. You wanted her gone. Well, she’s gone. And she took our entire world with her."
