Chapter 3 - The Reconnaissance

The foyer smelled of expensive potpourri and old money, but beneath the artificial fragrance hung the suffocating atmosphere of tyranny. Margaret scurried after my father, her face mottled with shock as he walked uninvited into the formal living room.

"You cannot simply march into my home and start dictating terms!" Margaret shrieked, her voice losing its polished composure. "Aaron, tell your father-in-law to leave this instant!"

Aaron hovered in the doorway, looking pathetically trapped between his mother’s wrath and the intimidating wall of my father’s presence. "Dad... Mr. Hayes... please. Let's just talk in the kitchen. We can work this out."

Dad didn't sit down. He stood tall by the marble fireplace, resting one hand casually on the mahogany mantel while his eyes swept the room, taking in every detail with the precision of a tactical commander assessing a hostile zone.

"Aaron," Dad said, his voice unnervingly calm. "When you married my daughter three years ago, you promised me you would provide for her, protect her, and honor her as an equal partner. Instead, I find my daughter walking the asphalt with a swollen ankle while you stand in a kitchen wiping your hands, letting your mother treat her like an indentured servant."

"I lost my job, okay?!" Aaron finally snapped, his voice cracking under the pressure. "The tech sector collapsed! I’m trying to find work! It’s not my fault we had to move back here!"

"It is not your fault that you lost your job," Dad replied coldly. "It is your fault that you surrendered your spine to a woman who views your family as property."

Margaret stepped up, her finger trembling as she pointed it at my father’s chest. "Listen to me, you arrogant old man! I feed them, I house them, and I pay the bills in this house! Your daughter brought nothing to this marriage except herself and her complaints. She uses my kitchen, she sleeps in my guest suite, and she drives the car that my son insures!"

I flinched, stepping forward to defend myself, but Dad raised a single hand, stopping me instantly.

"Your son insures it?" Dad asked, raising an eyebrow. "Is that what Aaron told you?"

Margaret scoffed. "Of course he did! Aaron handles all the financial logistics of this household."

Dad reached into his back pocket, pulling out a sleek leather wallet. He extracted a crisp, folded document and tossed it onto the glass coffee table between us.

"Then I suggest you check the title and registration records," Dad said quietly. "Because that SUV was purchased outright using Elena’s pre-marital savings account and an inheritance from her grandmother. The loan is in her name, the insurance is in her name, and your son’s name isn’t anywhere on the legal tender."

Aaron turned pale, staring at the document on the table as if it were a venomous snake.

Margaret’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "That... that’s impossible! Aaron told us—"

"Aaron lied to you to keep the peace, and he lied to you to maintain his illusion of control," Dad finished for her. He turned his gaze back to me. "Elena, pack your bags. You and Caleb are coming home with me tonight."
