Chapter 7 - The Safe Harbor

Dad’s estate in the foothills outside Colorado Springs was an absolute fortress of tranquility. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, the sprawling stone-and-timber lodge was surrounded by towering pines and secured by discreet, high-level perimeter monitoring that ensured absolute privacy.

When we pulled up to the grand iron gates, the security guard snapped a crisp salute to my father before pressing the remote activator.

Inside, the house was warm, smelling of cedarwood, roasted coffee, and old leather. A fire crackled brightly in the massive stone hearth of the grand living room. Waiting for us by the door was Mrs. Gable, Dad’s loyal housekeeper of twenty years, who greeted me with tears in her eyes and wrapped me in a fierce, maternal embrace.

"Oh, my sweet girl," Mrs. Gable murmured, stroking my hair. "Look at you. You're finally home."

Within an hour, Caleb was sleeping soundly in a beautiful mahogany crib in the nursery—a room Dad had apparently kept prepared, just in case my fragile marriage ever collapsed under the weight of its own toxicity.

I sat by the kitchen island, sipping a steaming cup of chamomile tea while Mrs. Gable bandaged my swollen ankle with professional care.

"The swelling is going down, but you need to stay off that foot for at least forty-eight hours," Mrs. Gable instructed firmly. "No walking, no lifting heavy boxes, and certainly no chasing toddlers across gravel paths."

"Understood, Sergeant Gable," I smiled weakly.

Just then, Dad walked into the kitchen carrying a thick stack of legal documents and a secure laptop. He set them down on the counter and poured himself a cup of black coffee.

"Marcus is on his way," Dad said, checking his watch.

"Marcus?" I asked, confused. "Marcus Vance? The family law attorney?"

"The best family law and corporate litigation attorney west of the Mississippi," Dad corrected calmly. "He’s already reviewed the preliminary asset freezes on Aaron’s accounts. Given that Aaron was using embezzled funds to maintain that household, the courts are going to move swiftly to protect your pre-marital assets from being seized by his creditors."

I stared at my father, overwhelmed by his absolute efficiency. "Dad, you didn't have to mobilize a legal team tonight."

"Elena, when an enemy breaches the perimeter, you don't wait for morning to mount a defense," Dad said, his eyes locking onto mine with fierce paternal devotion. "Aaron tried to trap you in a life of debt, isolation, and emotional abuse. We are going to sever every legal, financial, and relational tie before he even has time to realize what hit him."
