Chapter 4 - The Tactical Extraction

"You can't just take her!" Margaret shrieked, panic finally piercing through her arrogant facade as she realized her absolute control was slipping through her fingers. "She has nowhere else to go! She’s financially dependent on us—on him!"
"On the contrary, Mrs. Vance," a deep, crisp voice echoed from the front hallway.
We all turned. Standing in the foyer, holding the door open, was Colonel Thomas Vance—no relation to my in-laws, despite the shared surname—one of my father’s most trusted executive officers, dressed impeccably in civilian attire, accompanied by two military transport specialists carrying heavy duffel bags.
Margaret gasped, clutching her pearls. "Who... who are you? How did you get in here?"
"General Hayes gave me the address, ma'am," Colonel Vance replied smoothly, stepping into the living room and offering my father a crisp, immaculate salute, which Dad returned with a sharp nod.
My jaw dropped. Dad had coordinated this entire extraction before we even reached the front porch.
"Dad, what is this?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.
"This, Elena, is a logistical relocation," Dad said, walking over to me and gently placing a hand on my shoulder. "You are not a prisoner of war, and you are no longer staying in a hostile environment."
Aaron lunged forward, his face flushed with humiliation and fury. "You're treating this like a military operation! You're breaking up my family! Elena, you can't leave with him—we're married!"
"A marriage requires mutual respect, Aaron, not a hostage situation," I said, my voice finally finding its strength. I looked at the man I had loved, the man who had stood silently by while his mother degraded me day after day. "You watched me walk home with our baby. You didn't call, you didn't look for us, and when we got here, you let your mother berate me for daring to use my own car. It’s over, Aaron."
"No! You're just emotional! Your dad is manipulating you!" Aaron shouted, grabbing my wrist.
Before Aaron’s fingers could fully tighten around my arm, Colonel Vance stepped between us with lightning speed, his hand gently but firmly gripping Aaron’s forearm and forcing him back a step. There was no violence, just absolute, undeniable physical superiority.
"Do not lay a hand on her, son," Colonel Vance advised quietly, his eyes like ice.
Margaret rushed forward, screaming hysterically. "Assault! You're assaulting my son in my own home! I'm calling the police!"

"Go ahead," Dad said calmly, pulling a secure satellite phone from his pocket. "Tell the local precinct that General Robert Hayes of the United States Army is assisting his daughter in recovering her legally registered property. See how fast they transfer the call to federal command."
Margaret froze, the phone slipping from her trembling fingers onto the carpet.
