Chapter 9 - Unconditional Surrender

Ten minutes later, the heavy iron gates parted, and Margaret Vance’s luxury sedan crept up the winding mountain driveway.
Through the office window, I watched as she stepped out of her car. Gone was the arrogant, perfectly groomed matriarch of Elmwood Avenue. Her hair was disheveled, her designer coat was wrinkled, and she walked with the defeated posture of a woman whose entire empire had just been vaporized.
Mrs. Gable escorted her into the grand foyer, leaving her standing alone in the cavernous stone entryway.
Dad didn't invite her into the office. Instead, he walked out into the foyer, standing tall at the top of the grand staircase, looking down at her like a commanding officer reviewing a defeated enemy combatant. Marcus and I stood quietly behind him in the shadows of the landing.
Margaret looked up, her eyes red-rimmed and desperate.
"General Hayes..." she choked out, her voice cracking. "Please. I know... I know things got out of hand. But you have to help us. The bank... the federal agents... they locked us out of the house this morning. We have nowhere to go."
Dad crossed his arms over his chest, his face an unreadable mask of stone.
"Mrs. Vance," Dad said, his voice echoing off the high timber ceilings. "When my daughter married your son, she brought loyalty, patience, and love into your home. How did you repay her?"
Margaret opened her mouth, but no words came out. She swallowed hard, tears spilling over her cheeks. "I... I was protecting my family..."
"You were protecting your fragile ego and your house of cards," Dad corrected coldly. "You treated my daughter like a servant, you humiliated my grandson, and you enabled your son’s criminal behavior while pointing your finger at everyone else."
"Please," she sobbed, taking a step toward the stairs. "Just talk to Elena. Let her give us a loan—just enough to secure an apartment—"
"Stop right there," Dad commanded, his voice dropping an octave with such absolute authority that Margaret froze instantly. "You will never contact my daughter again. Any future communication regarding Aaron, the divorce, or custody will go exclusively through Mr. Vance’s legal office. If you or your son come within five hundred yards of this property or my grandson, I will personally ensure that federal marshals enforce every restraining order in the book."
Margaret crumpled, collapsing onto her knees on the stone floor, burying her face in her hands as the full, crushing weight of her consequences finally destroyed her.
Dad didn't blink, didn't offer a hand, and didn't show an ounce of pity. In war, as in life, mercy was for the wounded who sought rehabilitation, not tyrants who refused to surrender until their walls had fallen.

He turned around, looked at me, and offered a soft, reassuring nod.
"Let's go inside," he said gently. "Your son is waking up."
