Chapter 1 - The Secret in the Backpack

The kitchen was quiet, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the gentle tick of the antique clock on the mantel. Outside, the morning sun was just beginning to slice through the heavy pine trees, casting long, fractured shadows across the linoleum floor.
I stared at Harper’s arm. The five distinct bruises—four neat ovals on the inside of her bicep, and a larger, flat-pressed indentation on the outer side—were fresh. They were a deep, angry purple at the center, fading to a sickly yellowish-green at the edges. My fingers, accustomed to feeling for faint pulses and checking the boundaries of broken bones in the chaos of the ER, trembled slightly as I gently held her wrist.
"Harper," I whispered, keeping my voice as level as I could. "Who did this?"
She didn't answer. Her small body was as rigid as stone, her chest rising and falling in short, shallow gasps. She looked past me, her eyes darting toward the hallway as if she expected Clara to materialize from the shadows, even though Clara had left for her office thirty minutes prior.
Slowly, Harper reached behind her back. Her small hands fumbled with the zipper of her worn school backpack. She pulled it open, her movements frantic yet incredibly quiet. She reached deep into the front pocket, past the half-eaten granola bars and the crumpled coloring pages, and pulled out a small, metallic object wrapped in a torn piece of paper.
She held it out to me. Her hands were shaking so violently that the object nearly slipped through her fingers.
"Daddy..." she whispered, her voice cracking, using the word for the very first time. "Look at this."
I took it from her. I unwrapped the scrap of paper. Inside was a small, high-capacity USB flash drive, its plastic casing scratched and dented, and a silver, battery-operated digital voice recorder—the kind university students use to record lectures.
"What is this, sweetheart?" I asked softly, kneeling down so we were at eye level.
"I found it in Mommy's locked closet," Harper whispered, her green eyes wide with a terrifying, adult-like panic. "It was in the floorboard under the loose wood. I hid it in my doll. Mommy... Mommy doesn't know I have it. She was looking for it last week. That's when..." She pointed a trembling finger at the bruises on her arm. "That's when she gripped me. She said if I took her things, she would make the fire happen again."
The mention of the fire made my stomach drop. "What fire, Harper? Tell me."
"The fire that took my real daddy," she sobbed, finally letting the tears fall. "She said he didn't listen to her, so the fire came to take him away. She said if I don't play nice, the fire will come for you too."
May you like
My blood ran cold. The implications of her words crashed over me like a freezing wave. I looked down at the voice recorder in my hand. I slipped the USB drive into my pocket, wrapped my arms around Harper, and held her tight.
"I'm not going anywhere, Harper," I whispered into her hair. "I promise you. The fire is not going to touch us."
