Chapter 4 - The Mask of Perfection

Clara stepped out of the vehicle. She looked stunning, as always—a beige trench coat draped over her shoulders, her dark hair perfectly styled, a warm, serene smile on her lips. She walked toward the school entrance with the effortless grace of a woman who had never known a day of struggle.
But as she pushed open the glass doors and saw me standing in the lobby, her smile faltered for a fraction of a second.
"Ethan?" she said, her voice dripping with sweet confusion. "What are you doing here? I thought you had a shift tonight."
"I took some time off, Clara," I said, keeping my hands shoved deep into my pockets so she wouldn't see them shaking. "I thought I'd join you and Harper for ice cream."
Clara’s eyes narrowed slightly, her gaze scanning my face, searching for any sign of betrayal. "Oh, that’s wonderful, darling. But I thought it would be a nice mother-daughter bonding trip. You’ve been spending so much time with her lately, I felt a bit left out."
She bypassed me and walked toward the reception desk. "Hi, Mrs. Gable. I’m here to check Harper out early."
Mrs. Gable cleared her throat, her face pale. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Monroe... or, sorry, Mrs. Hawthorne. We actually have a minor administrative issue. We can't release Harper just yet."
Clara’s posture went rigid. The warmth evaporated from her eyes, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness. "An administrative issue? What kind of issue?"
"Just some updated custody and guardian paperwork we need to verify," I intervened, stepping between Clara and the desk. "Why don't we step into the conference room and talk, Clara?"
Clara looked at me, her eyes locking onto mine with terrifying intensity. She knew. She didn't know how, or what exactly I had found, but she knew the game was up.
"You've been talking to her," Clara whispered, her voice dropping to a low, venomous hiss that Mrs. Gable couldn't hear. "You've been listening to that little brat's lies."
"They aren't lies, Clara," I said, my voice steady. "I saw the bruises. And I listened to the recordings."

The mention of the recordings sent a visible shockwave through her. Her hand flicked toward her designer handbag.
Before she could open it, the sound of sirens echoed in the distance, growing louder by the second.
