Chapter 6 - The Flames of Hawthorne Avenue

By the time we arrived at 219 Hawthorne Avenue, my worst fears had materialized.
Plumes of thick, black smoke were already billowing from the second-story windows of the historic Victorian home. The smell of burning wood and synthetic materials filled the crisp afternoon air.
Clara’s white SUV was parked haphazardly in the driveway, the driver’s door left wide open.
"She’s inside!" I yelled, throwing open my door before Sarah’s car had even come to a complete stop.
"Ethan, no! Wait for backup!" Sarah screamed, but I was already running.
As an ER nurse, I knew the dangers of smoke inhalation. I knew that three breaths of concentrated carbon monoxide could render a person unconscious. But I also knew that if there was any remaining evidence of Clara’s crimes inside that house, it was burning right now. And more importantly, I had to ensure Clara didn't escape through the back.
I kicked open the front door. A wall of heat and choking black smoke hit me, forcing me to my knees. I pulled my scrub top over my nose and mouth, crawling along the hardwood floor where the air was slightly clearer.
"Clara!" I shouted, my voice instantly raw from the smoke. "Clara, get out of here!"
From the top of the stairs, I heard a manic, high-pitched laugh.
Through the shifting curtain of smoke, I saw her. Clara was standing on the landing, her beige trench coat discarded, her clothes covered in soot. She held a gas can in one hand and a flickering lighter in the other.
"You ruined it, Ethan!" she screamed down at me, her eyes wild with a terrifying madness. "We could have been perfect! I gave you a family! I gave you a beautiful life! And you let that little useless girl ruin it!"
"Clara, put the lighter down!" I yelled, slowly crawling up the first few steps. "The police are outside. The house is surrounded. It’s over."
"It’s only over when I say it is!" she shrieked.

She dropped the lighter onto the gasoline-soaked carpet of the hallway.
A sheet of orange fire erupted between us, roaring like a living beast.
