Chapter 4 - The Gala of Deceit

The Fairmont Hotel was a bastion of old Dallas wealth—a towering spectacle of crystal chandeliers, white-gloved waiters, and millions of dollars worth of diamonds shifting under the soft ballroom lights.

At 7:30 AM, the annual Spring Benefactor’s Gala was winding down to its final, elite breakfast session. The attendees were billionaires, politicians, and high-ranking financial executives. Among them, looking radiant and completely unbothered by the criminal chaos she had unleashed hours earlier, was Allison Caldwell. She wore a stunning emerald-green silk dress, her neck adorned with a diamond collar that belonged to Ryder’s mother.

She was laughing with a group of high-society women, playing the role of the tragic, stressed wife whose husband was "unfortunately stuck overseas on business."

From the upper balcony overlooking the grand ballroom, Ryder stood in the shadows, dressed in a tailored tuxedo provided by Marcus. His eyes were locked on Allison. The sheer audacity of her composure made his blood boil, but he controlled it. Emotion was a luxury he couldn't afford right now.

"Target sighted," Marcus whispered into Ryder’s earpiece from a surveillance van parked two blocks away. "Arthur Pendleton is sitting at table four, near the stage. He’s surrounded by three security guards. You’ve got about twenty minutes before he leaves for his private office to oversee the morning’s high-value wire transfers."

"Copy that. Moving in," Ryder murmured.

Instead of approaching Pendleton directly, which would draw immediate attention from Allison and her security, Ryder intercepted a catering manager. Using a forged security credential created by Marcus, Ryder gained access to the private VIP lounge behind the main ballroom stage—a quiet area reserved for the gala's top benefactors.

Two minutes later, Arthur Pendleton, a dignified man in his late seventies with sharp blue eyes and a perfectly manicured silver beard, stepped into the lounge to take a private phone call.

"Arthur," Ryder said quietly, stepping out from behind a decorative privacy screen.

Pendleton spun around, his hand instinctively moving toward his suit jacket, but he stopped when he recognized the face. "Ryder? Ryder Caldwell? Good Lord, boy, I thought you were in Saudi Arabia! Your wife told me just last week that you wouldn't be back until winter."

"My wife lied about a lot of things, Arthur," Ryder said, stepping forward, his expression dead serious. He pulled a compact tablet from his jacket. "I need five minutes of your time. If you don't look at this right now, your bank is about to facilitate a thirty-four-million-dollar international grand theft. And my mother is going to die."

Pendleton’s professional demeanor hardened instantly. He looked at the intensity in Ryder’s eyes—the same intensity he had seen in Ryder’s father years ago. "Show me."

Ryder opened the file. First, he played the video from the kitchen: Allison smiling while Victor counted the cash, followed by the audio clip where they explicitly discussed killing Eleanor once the money was moved. Then, he brought up the live digital ledger showing the forged Power of Attorney document currently sitting in the queue at Pendleton’s own regional banking branch, scheduled for automatic execution at 9:00 AM.

Pendleton’s face went from polite curiosity to absolute ash-gray horror. "This... this is monstrous. Eleanor? She did this to Eleanor? Arthur Caldwell would turn in his grave!"

"The final transfer of twenty million is scheduled to clear your system in exactly one hour," Ryder said. "I don't just want it stopped, Arthur. I want them caught in the act. If we freeze it now, they'll know, and they'll run. I need you to let the system think the transfer is processing, but redirect the funds into a secure escrow account held under my exclusive name."

Pendleton looked at the clock on the wall. It was 8:05 AM. "Consider it done. I will personally log into the secure federal terminal from my mobile device right now and flag the transaction for internal diversion. But Ryder... Victor Vance is a dangerous man. He has people on his payroll inside the local police precinct. If you try to arrest them here, it could turn into a bloodbath."

"I don't plan on arresting them here," Ryder said, a cold, calculated fire burning in his eyes. "I plan on breaking them."
