Chapter 6 - The Long Road Back

The immediate storm had passed, but the aftermath of Allison’s betrayal left deep scars that could not be healed overnight.

Two weeks after the dramatic arrests at the Fairmont Hotel, the Caldwell family estate was quiet again. The physical damage to the house had been repaired—the walls patched, the broken furniture replaced—but Ryder refused to step foot inside the master bedroom. It was tainted. He ordered every single piece of Allison's clothing, jewelry, and personal belongings to be packed into industrial trash bags and sent directly to the public defender's office handling her case. He wanted no trace of her remaining in his life.

The real battle now was fought in the quiet sanctuary of the safehouse, which Ryder had permanently purchased from Marcus to serve as a temporary haven while his mother recovered.

Eleanor sat by the large bay window overlooking the peaceful pine forests. The physical bruises on her arms had faded to a faint yellowish-green, and the cast on her fractured wrist was clean and white. But the psychological trauma was a heavy, invisible anchor. Every time a door closed too loudly, or a floorboard creaked, she would flinch, her eyes darting around in terror.

"She’s having nightmares, Ryder," Grace said quietly, stepping onto the back porch where Ryder was splitting firewood.

Grace looked vastly different now. The uniform of a subjugated housemaid was gone, replaced by comfortable, casual clothes. The cut above her eyebrow had healed into a thin, silver line—a badge of pure courage. Ryder had insisted on paying for the best plastic surgeons in Dallas to minimize the scarring, though Grace had protested that it wasn't necessary.

Ryder drove the axe into a log of oak, splitting it cleanly down the center. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked at Grace. "What kind of nightmares?"

"She thinks she’s still locked in the room," Grace said, her voice filled with a deep, maternal empathy that defied her young age. "She keeps calling out for your father. And she... she keeps asking if she did something wrong to make Allison hate her."

Ryder felt a familiar, sharp pang of guilt in his chest. "If I hadn't taken that contract in Saudi Arabia... if I hadn't been so blind to Allison's true nature..."

"Stop that," Grace said firmly, stepping closer, her gaze steady and unyielding. "You cannot blame yourself for the malice of a monster, Ryder. You came back. You saved her. You saved both of us. If you hadn't installed those hidden cameras, we would both be dead right now. Don't ever forget that."

Ryder looked at Grace, truly looked at her. In the midst of the worst horror his family had ever faced, this young woman, who owed them nothing, had used her own body as a human shield to protect his mother. She had endured beatings, threats, and near-death experiences, yet her primary concern was still Eleanor's peace of mind.

"Thank you, Grace," Ryder said, his voice thick with emotion. "For everything."

"I’m just glad we're safe," she replied, a soft, genuine smile warming her face. "But the legal battle is coming, Ryder. Marcus says the grand jury is convening next week. Allison’s lawyers are going to try to play dirty."

"Let them try," Ryder said, his jaw tightening. "They haven't seen the half of what I have prepared."
