Chapter 8 - Secrets Unleashed

The defense tried one final, desperate gambit. During the cross-examination of Grace, Robert Vance attempted to paint her as a gold-digging accomplice who had colluded with Ryder to oust Allison from the family fortune.
"Isn't it true, Miss Grace, that your salary was doubled by Mr. Caldwell immediately following his return?" Vance sneered, leaning over the witness stand. "Isn't it true that you stand to gain significant financial stability by replacing Mrs. Caldwell in that household?"
Grace didn't flinch. She looked directly at the jury. "My salary was increased because I took a beating to save a human life. I don't care about the Caldwell money. I care about Mrs. Eleanor, who treated me like a daughter when my own family abandoned me. I would have protected her for free. Can your client say she ever did anything for love, rather than greed?"
The jury members were visibly moved, several of them nodding in approval.
But the final blow to the defense didn't come from the witness stand; it came from the digital forensics team led by Marcus.
While the trial was ongoing, Marcus had successfully cracked the secondary encryption on Victor Vance’s seized tablet, which had been infected by Ryder’s Trojan Horse malware. What they found inside was a Pandora's box of criminal enterprise.
That evening, in a closed-door chamber meeting with the judge, the prosecution presented the newly unsealed data.
"Your Honor," Prosecutor Jenkins explained, displaying the files on a secure monitor. "We have recovered the complete ledger of Aegis Holdings. This isn't just an embezzlement scheme against the Caldwell family. Allison Caldwell and Victor Vance have been running an organized elder-exploitation ring across the state of Texas for the last four years. They targeted wealthy, isolated elderly individuals, forged power of attorney documents, placed them in substandard care facilities under assumed names, and drained their estates. We have identified eleven other victims. Five of them died under 'mysterious' circumstances."
The judge, a hardened veteran of the bench, looked at the evidence with absolute revulsion. "This isn't a white-collar crime anymore. This is serial murder for financial gain."
The next morning, when court resumed, the defense attorney, Robert Vance, looked pale. He walked over to Allison, whispered something in her ear, and stepped back. He knew when he was beaten. To continue defending her would ruin his own career.
Allison looked around the courtroom. Victor Vance had already agreed to a plea bargain thirty minutes prior, turning state's evidence against her in exchange for escaping the death penalty. He had laid every single detail of their plot bare.
She was utterly, completely alone.
The judge looked down from the bench. "In light of the overwhelming, irrefutable evidence and the co-defendant's full confession, the court is ready to bypass further deliberation."
Allison stood up, her voice cracking. "Ryder... please. I did it for us. We could have been so happy. You were always away... you neglected me!"
Ryder didn't look at her. He kept his eyes forward, his arm wrapped comfortingly around Grace's shoulders, who was sitting beside him.

"The defendant will remain silent," the judge barked. "Allison Caldwell, for the charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, elder abuse, attempted murder, and multiple counts of conspiracy, I sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. You will serve your time at the maximum-security facility in Gatesville. Take her away."
As the marshals dragged Allison out of the courtroom, she screamed, her voice echoing down the hall until the heavy double doors slammed shut, cutting off her malice from the world forever.
