Chapter 1 - The Secret Under the Skin

Lily’s voice was barely louder than a whisper, but in the sterile quiet of the triage room, it sounded like a glass vase shattering on porcelain.
“Mommy was in the kitchen,” Lily said, her small fingers twisting the hospital sheet into tight white ropes. “She was holding Caleb’s arm so he wouldn't hit the wall. But Caleb didn't hit the wall. He threw the heavy glass bowl. It broke against the doorframe, and a sharp piece went inside my shoulder.”
I felt the air drain from my lungs. I reached out and squeezed Lily’s small, shivering hand, my thumb rubbing circles over her knuckles.
The nurse, whose nametag read Rachel, RN, didn't flinch. Her face didn't show shock, but her eyes darkened with an intense, quiet resolve. She looked at me, gave a single nod that signaled a protocol had just been triggered, and stood up calmly.
“I’m going to get Dr. Vance,” Rachel said softly, keeping her voice light for the children. “Emma, sweetie, those are wonderful blue trees you’re drawing.”
Emma looked up from her coloring page, oblivious to the storm in the room, and smiled proudly.
The moment Rachel stepped into the hallway, my phone buzzed violently in my lap.
Sarah.
I tapped the screen and held the phone to my ear, keeping my voice dangerously low. “Sarah.”
“Where are you?” Sarah demanded. Her voice wasn't soft or reasonable anymore; it was high-pitched, sharp, and frayed at the edges. I could hear the distinct sound of a car engine revving in the background. “You took her to Harbor Memorial, didn't you? Laura, listen to me! You don't know what Caleb is like when he gets backed into a corner!”
“He threw a glass bowl at a six-year-old child, Sarah!” I hissed, walking toward the far corner of the room, keeping my back to the girls. “You lied to me! You told me she slipped!”
“He didn't mean to hit her!” Sarah sobbed, her composure completely cracking. “He was angry at me! It was an accident! If you let the hospital file a report, CPS will take Lily away from me, Laura! They’ll put her in foster care! Is that what you want? Do you want to destroy my family?”
“You destroyed your family the second you let that man stay in the house after he bleeding your child!” I snapped. “Don't come near this hospital, Sarah. I swear to God, if Caleb steps foot on this floor, I will have security arrest him.”
“Laura, please—”
I hung up and blocked her number.
Five minutes later, Dr. Vance, a tall woman with graying hair and a calm, authoritative presence, walked into the room alongside two uniformed police officers.
“Mrs. Vance?” Dr. Vance addressed me gently. “I’m Dr. Vance. The nurse explained the situation. We’re going to perform a full medical evaluation, photograph the wound for evidence, and gently remove those stitches so we can inspect the depth of the tissue damage.”
As the doctor prepped her instruments, one of the officers—Officer Martinez—stepped closer to me. “Ma’am, based on the child's statement and the nature of the injury, we are opening an active child endangerment and domestic assault investigation against Caleb Miller and Sarah Bennett. We need you to stay with the child as her legal temporary guardian until Child Protective Services arrives.”
Lily looked up at me, her blue eyes wide with terror. “Aunt Laura... am I going to go away?”
May you like
I knelt beside her bed, took both of her tiny, cold hands in mine, and looked her straight in the eyes.
“No, sweetie,” I swore softly. “You and Emma are coming home with me. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
