Chapter 2 - The Lockdown

By 3:00 PM, the sky over the hospital had turned a heavy, bruised purple, signaling an incoming summer thunderstorm.

Lily’s medical examination was complete. The doctor confirmed that the incision was deep, requiring internal dissolving stitches that had been crudely placed at an unaccredited walk-in clinic—a obvious attempt by Sarah and Caleb to avoid mandatory reporting laws.

While we waited for the CPS caseworker to finalize emergency placement papers transferring temporary custody of Lily to me, the hospital room door rattled.

A tall, broad-shouldered man in a rain-slicked leather jacket pushed through the heavy doors of the pediatric ward hallway.

It was Caleb.

Through the narrow rectangular window in our room door, I saw him standing near the nurse's station. His jaw was set, his eyes bloodshot and frantic. Behind him, trying desperately to pull his arm, was Sarah. She looked hollowed out, her face pale, hair soaked from the rain.

“I’m looking for my daughter, Lily Bennett!” Caleb shouted, his deep voice carrying through the ward. Several nurses backed away, immediately reaching for their emergency desk buttons.

“Sir, you need to step back!” a hospital security guard commanded, moving into Caleb's path. “This is a restricted pediatric floor!”

“She’s my kid!” Caleb roared, shoving the guard’s chest. “Her mother is right here! Some crazy aunt kidnapped her from a pool! We are taking her home right now!”

In the room, Lily gasped and scrambled under the thin hospital blanket, burying her face against Emma’s side. Emma wrapped her small arms around her cousin, her eyes wide with fear.

“Stay behind me,” I told the girls, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

I marched directly to the heavy oak door, locked it from the inside, and pulled the blinds shut.

Outside, the alarm began to chime—a sharp, rhythmic tone signaling a facility lockdown.

“Laura!” Sarah’s voice screamed from the hallway, muffled by the door. “Laura, open the door! Just let Caleb talk to you! He just wants to explain! Please don't do this!”

“Get away from the door, Sarah!” I screamed back.

Suddenly, a loud THUD rattled the doorframe. Caleb had slammed his shoulder against the wood.

“You think you’re so righteous, don't you, Laura?!” Caleb yelled, his voice laced with unhinged rage. “You’ve been looking down on Sarah and me since the day I moved in! Open this damn door before I break it down!”

THUD!

The wood groaned. Lily screamed inside the room.

Before Caleb could strike the door a third time, heavy, tactical footsteps echoed down the hallway.

“ON THE GROUND! NOW!” Officer Martinez’s voice boomed through the corridor.

"Get your hands off me!" Caleb spat.

A loud scuffle ensued—shoes squeaking on polished tile, the metallic clinking of handcuffs, Sarah screaming frantically, and then the heavy thud of Caleb being forced to the floor.

“Caleb Miller, you are under arrest for felony child abuse, domestic violence, and trespassing!”

Silence fell over the hallway, broken only by Sarah’s muffled, hysterical sobs as Caleb was dragged away in chains.

I fell back against the locked door, sliding down until my knees hit the floor, breathing heavily. I looked across the room at Lily and Emma holding each other on the bed.

The nightmare was far from over. It was only just beginning.
