Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

Two years later.
The summer sun beat down brightly over the community pool—the very same pool where this nightmare had begun two years ago.
Children were laughing, splashing in the blue water, their screams of joy echoing against the concrete walls. The smell of sunblock and hot dogs drifted from the concession stand.
On the edge of the shallow end, two eight-year-old girls were sitting on the blue tiles, dangling their feet in the water.
Emma and Lily.
Lily wore a bright blue polka-dot swimsuit. On her left shoulder, a thin, faint silver line was visible—the scar from the incision. But there was no surgical tape. No fear in her posture. No desperate checking of phones every time a screen buzzed.
She was laughing, splashing Emma with a torrent of water, her cheeks flushed with pure, unburdened childhood joy.
Sitting beside me on the wooden bench under the big green umbrella was Sarah.
She had been released four months ago. She was living in a quiet two-bedroom apartment three miles from my house, working as a junior bookkeeper at a local bakery, and attending weekly support meetings.
She looked radiant, healthy, and whole.
“Look at them,” Sarah whispered, taking a sip of her iced tea, her eyes fixed on the girls in the pool.
“They’re unstoppable,” I smiled, leaning back against the bench.
Sarah turned to look at me. She reached into her bag and pulled out a small, framed photograph.
It was a photo taken that morning: Lily, Emma, Sarah, and me standing on my front porch, holding hands, laughing under the morning sun.
“I used to think my life was over that Friday in the hospital,” Sarah said softly, looking at the photo. “I thought I lost everything.”
“You didn't lose everything, Sarah,” I said, wrapping my arm around her shoulder and pulling her close. “You just had to shed the skin that was hurting you.”
Down in the pool, Lily looked up, caught her mother’s eye, and waved frantically with both arms.

“Mommy! Aunt Laura! Look at this!” Lily shouted happily.
She dove under the clear blue water, gliding smoothly across the surface, breaking through the sunlight on the other side, free, safe, and completely unbroken.
