Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

Sarah stood shivering, her clothes soaked from the night air, her hands covered in white ceramic dust and blood. She looked down at Caleb, who was groaning on the floor, trying to push himself up.
“Sarah...?” Caleb wheezed, looking up at her in stunned shock. “What... what are you doing?”
Sarah looked at him, and for the first time in months, the haze of fear and brainwashing in her eyes was completely gone. In its place was a cold, terrifying hatred.
“You came to my sister’s house,” Sarah whispered, her voice dropping into a deadly register. “You threatened my daughter.”
Caleb reached out a hand to grab her ankle. “Sarah, baby, help me—”
Sarah kicked his hand away with the heavy heel of her boot. “Don't touch me.”
Outside, red and blue lights illuminated the living room windows as three police cruisers screeched into the driveway, tires screaming against the asphalt.
“POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR!”
I pushed myself up from the floor, coughing, and unlocked the front door. Four officers, guns drawn, surged into the house.
“ON THE GROUND! DON'T MOVE!”
Within seconds, Caleb was pinned to the kitchen floor, heavy knees on his back, his hands forcefully cuffed behind his waist. He spat blood onto the tile, cursing screaming profanities as Officer Martinez dragged him to his feet.
“You’re going away for a very long time, Miller,” Officer Martinez said, inspecting the shattered patio door and the crowbar on the floor.
As Caleb was hauled out into the rain, a second officer stepped toward Sarah, bringing out a pair of handcuffs.
“Sarah Bennett,” the officer said calmly. “You are under arrest as an accessory to domestic violence and breaking and entering.”
Sarah didn't fight. She held out her hands passively, letting the metal cuffs click around her wrists.
She turned to look at me, her eyes brimming with fresh tears.
“Laura,” Sarah said softly, her voice steady. “The drive... give it to the police. Give them everything.”
“Sarah—” I choked out, taking a step toward her.
“I was weak,” Sarah said, tears rolling down her cheeks. “I let him hurt Lily. I protected a monster because I was too terrified to be alone. I deserve to go to jail, Laura. But please... take care of my baby girl.”

I nodded slowly, tears stinging my eyes. “I will, Sarah. I promise.”
As the police led Sarah out into the squad car, I walked upstairs, unlocked the closet door, and pulled Emma and Lily into my arms.
