Chapter 17 - The Phoenix Defense

Emma didn't go back to her hotel. She didn't go to the airport. She knew Julian would have every exit from New York watched. Instead, she took a cab to a secure, independent legal clinic in Brooklyn run by an old military prosecutor she trusted—a man named Marcus Vance (no relation to Julian).
By midnight, Marcus had analyzed the contents of the flash drive and the ledger.
"This is radioactive, Emma," Marcus said, rubbing his eyes as the glowing screen illuminated his small office. "This doesn't just ruin Julian Vance; it implicates three federal judges, a senator, and the deputy director of the DOJ. If you go public with this normally, they’ll kill the story before it hits the wire."
"Then we don't go public normally," Emma said. She was sitting on a couch, her coat torn, her hands covered in soot from the subway tunnels. "We use Leo."
She called Leo. When he answered, his voice was thick with panic. "Emma! Thank God. I’ve been calling for hours. Are you okay?"
"I’m alive, Leo," she said, her voice steadying him. "Listen to me carefully. I need you to use your firm’s secure server. We’re going to upload a massive encrypted file. You need to send it to every major news outlet, every independent investigative journalist, and the international oversight committee in Geneva simultaneously. We launch the defense from Phoenix."
"I’m ready," Leo said, his tone shifting into professional focus. "Give me the access keys."
For the next four hours, Emma and Marcus transmitted the data from Brooklyn to Phoenix. Leo, working from his home office while Ruth slept peacefully in the next room, constructed an digital fortress around the files, ensuring that once they were released, they could not be deleted or retracted by any government agency.
"It's done," Leo said over the speakerphone at 4:00 AM. "The timer is set. The media has the encryption keys. In exactly six hours, the entire world will see what the Grand Pavilion really is."
"Good," Emma said. "But we have one more thing to do. Julian won't let this go. He’s going to try to kill the source before the timer hits zero."

"What are you going to do?" Leo asked, fear creeping back into his voice.
"I’m going to meet him," Emma said. "At the Grand Pavilion."
