Chapter 22 - The Iron Clad Alliance

By nightfall, the atmosphere inside the 3rd Street house was claustrophobic. Marcus Vance, the independent legal ally from Brooklyn, was on a secure video call on Leo’s monitor. His face looked grim under the harsh fluorescent light of his New York office.
"She’s telling the truth, Emma," Marcus said, rubbing his temple. "I’ve been digging through the digital dust of the file dump Leo executed. When your father copied the Grand Pavilion’s server data onto that flash drive, he didn't just grab financial records. He backed up the entire root directory. Embedded within the luxury real estate accounts were hidden sub-folders containing encrypted logistics for private military contractors tied to Vance Holdings."
Leo slammed his open hand against the desk. "We didn't look at those folders! We didn't even know they existed! We just pushed the data to the media servers to protect ourselves from Julian's assassins!"
"The law doesn't care about your intent, Leo," Marcus explained patiently, his voice heavy with professional exhaustion. "Under the Espionage Act, the unauthorized distribution of restricted defense data—even if done inadvertently to expose corporate corruption—is a strict liability offense. Victoria Vance has leverage. She’s using her connections in the Department of Defense to force a federal grand jury to investigate you both."
Emma paced the length of the living room, her eyes darting to the windows. The blinds were tightly drawn. "She doesn't want us in prison, Marcus. If she wanted us arrested, the FBI would have kicked our door down this morning. She’s using this to force a negotiation. She wants something back."
"The original physical drive," Leo realized, his face turning pale. "The one your father buried in the Meridian Bank vault. We still have it locked in our home safe."
"Exactly," Marcus agreed. "The digital copies on the internet are scrambled and incomplete because of the security protocols Leo bypassed, but the physical drive contains the unredacted master keys. If Victoria gets those keys, she can wipe her family's digital fingerprints from the defense contracts and leave you two holding the bag for the leak."
"We can't give it to her," Emma said, stopping her pacing. She looked at Leo, whose eyes were wide with anxiety. "If we give her the master keys, we destroy our only shield. Once she has what she wants, she’ll ensure we disappear into a federal prison forever to tie up the loose ends."
"Then what do we do?" Leo asked, his voice cracking. "Emma, we have a daughter. We can't go to war with the Pentagon."
Emma walked over to the safe hidden behind the bookshelf in Leo's study. She punched in the code, opened the heavy steel door, and pulled out the small, black metal flash drive. It looked completely ordinary, a piece of plastic and copper no larger than a house key, yet it held the power to destroy their lives or save them.
"We don't fight the Pentagon," Emma said, her voice regaining the absolute, unshakable authority that had commanded battalions. "We find the one person who hates Victoria Vance more than we do. Someone who knows how she operates, someone who has been sidelined by her for years."

Leo looked at her, confused. "Who?"
"My mother," Emma said flatly. "Eleanor Clark spent thirty years navigating the social and political circles of the New York elite. She knows every secret Victoria Vance tried to hide before she became a Washington power broker. It’s time to see if my mother's pride is stronger than her fear."
