Chapter 28 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The fallout from the 3rd Street press conference was swift and catastrophic for the Vance family network. Within forty-eight hours, the Department of Justice—under intense scrutiny from the international community and clean factions within Congress—was forced to dismiss the grand jury investigation against Emma and Leo.
A federal warrant was issued for Victoria Vance on charges of espionage, bribery, and illegal arms financing. She was arrested at Dulles International Airport as she attempted to board a private flight to a non-extradition country.
The images of Victoria Vance being led away in handcuffs, her expensive sunglasses falling to the tarmac, dominated the news cycle for a week. The Grand Pavilion’s remaining assets were seized by the federal government, its glass skyscraper in Manhattan slated to be liquidated and transformed into a public housing and community center.
In Phoenix, the quiet returned to 3rd Street. The satellite trucks left, the journalists vanished, and the neighborhood settled back into its peaceful, sunny routine.
One evening, Emma and Leo sat on the patio, watching the sunset cast deep purple and pink shadows across the desert sky. The young orange trees were quiet, their sweet scent filling the warm night air.
"It’s really over this time, isn't it?" Leo asked, pouring two glasses of white wine.
"It's over, Leo," Emma said, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Victoria is going to the same prison as her brother. The defense files have been secured, and the government has formally cleared our names. There are no more files, no more ledgers, no more hidden cabins."

"We survived them twice, Emma," Leo said softly, kissing the top of her head. "We built a fortress out of a patch of dirt."
"We didn't build a fortress, Leo," Emma corrected him, a beautiful, relaxed smile appearing on her lips. "We built a home. And that’s much harder to destroy."
