Chapter 18 - The Confrontation at the Grand Pavilion

At 8:00 AM, the Grand Pavilion was quiet. The massive, glass-and-steel skyscraper in midtown Manhattan looked cold in the morning light. It was Saturday, and the offices were mostly empty, save for essential security.

Emma walked through the front doors. She didn't hide. She walked straight to the security desk and looked at the guard. "Tell Julian Vance that Captain Clark is here to sign the agreement."

Five minutes later, she was escorted to the top floor—the penthouse boardroom that overlooked Central Park.

Julian was there, sitting at the massive mahogany table. He looked haggard, his tie loosened, a glass of scotch in front of him despite the early hour. His two guards stood behind him, one wearing a bandage over his broken nose.

"You’re a difficult woman to kill, Emma," Julian said, his voice raspy. "But you’re stupid. Walking back in here? You’ve handed me the ledger."

Emma placed the leather book on the table. "Here it is. Everything my father collected. Everything that can destroy you."

Julian reached for it, a look of triumph flashing in his eyes. "Sensible girl. Now, sign the confession, and you can go back to your little dirt patch in Arizona."

"I don't think you understand, Julian," Emma said, leaning against the glass window, looking out at the city. "That ledger isn't my leverage. It’s my bait."

Julian froze, his hand resting on the book. "What do you mean?"

Emma looked at her watch. "It’s 8:45 AM. In exactly fifteen minutes, the contents of that book, along with the encrypted files from my father’s flash drive, will be broadcast globally. Every bank account you hold in Switzerland, every bribe you paid to the DOJ, every illegal transaction tied to this building will be public domain."

Julian laughed, though it sounded forced. "You’re bluffing. My people control the servers."

"Your people control New York," Emma countered, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "They don't control the independent servers in Phoenix, Arizona. They don't control my husband."

Julian’s phone suddenly buzzed violently on the table. He picked it up. As he read the screen, the color completely drained from his face. His hands began to shake.

"Sir," one of the guards said, looking at his own phone. "The Department of Justice... the real oversight committee... they just issued an emergency warrant. The building is being surrounded."

Julian looked up at Emma, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fury. "You ruined us. You ruined everything your family built!"

"My family built a prison, Julian," Emma said, turning her back on him to look at the sky. "I just tore it down."
