Chapter 7 - The Deed on the Table

Lily gestured to her assistant, who placed a heavy oak folding table in the center of the room and laid down a single-page contract alongside a silver Montblanc pen.

Rachel scrambled up from the floor, wiping her tears with her sleeve, a pathetic glint of hope returning to her eyes. "Anything! I’ll sign anything! Just don't kick me out! I have nowhere else to go!"

"Listen to the condition before you touch that pen," Lily warned, her tone razor-sharp.

The entire family leaned in, hanging on every word spoken by the girl they had once discarded.

"Condition number one," Lily began, holding up a finger. "Ownership of Crestview Estate will never return to you. It will be transferred immediately into a charitable trust—The Claire Foundation—named in honor of my mother."

Rachel’s jaw dropped, but she didn't dare interrupt.

"Condition number two," Lily continued. "The estate will no longer be a residence for vanity. It will be converted into a temporary housing retreat for exhausted, underpaid healthcare workers and emergency room nurses who need rest and recovery—the very people my mother spent her life working alongside while you mocked her scrubs."

"No... no!" Rachel cried. "Where will I live?"

"That brings me to condition number three," Lily said, leaning over the table, her eyes locking onto Rachel’s terrified face. "You may occupy the small carriage house at the back of the property—the maid's quarters. But to live there rent-free, you will serve as the property’s head custodian."

A collective gasp echoed through the room.

"A custodian?" Rachel shrieked. "You want me to clean up after nurses?"

"You will scrub the floors, wash the linens, trim the hedges, and maintain the grounds," Lily said without a flicker of emotion. "And every single morning at 8:00 AM, you will walk into the main house, look at the portrait of my mother that will hang in the foyer, and clean the glass frame."

May you like

"You are insane!" Rachel screamed. "You’re doing this to humiliate me!"

"No," Lily replied calmly. "I’m doing this to teach you the value of honest labor—something you never understood when you spat in my mother's face."
