Chapter 8 - The Unforgiving Condition

The silence in the room was suffocating.

Rachel turned to my father, her eyes wild with panic. "Dad! Do something! Speak to her! She’s your granddaughter! You can't let her treat me like a servant!"

My father slowly turned his head to look at Rachel, then looked down at his own withered hands resting on his lap. He had no power here. His money was gone, his health was broken, and his favorite grandson was a failure. The authority he had wielded so brutally ten years ago had completely evaporated.

"Rachel..." my father whispered, his voice trembling with shame. "Sign it. Or you’ll be on the street tonight."

Rachel gasped, looking at her brother Mark. But Mark couldn't even look her in the eye; he was staring at the floor, utterly defeated.

Lily turned her attention to Ethan.

"And as for you, Ethan," Lily said, her voice dropping an octave.

Ethan flinched, stepping back. "I... I didn't do anything to you!"

"You sat there while your parents and grandfather tore down my mother," Lily said. "You spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of family money on a lifestyle you didn't earn. My company, Aegis Innovations, offers a community outreach apprenticeship program for young adults who lack education and discipline. You will enroll in it starting Monday. You will sweep floors, unload server racks, and work forty hours a week at minimum wage until you learn what hard work actually means."

"And if I refuse?" Ethan blurted out, trying to sound tough, though his voice cracked.

"Then I will ensure that every business network, bank, and agency under my holding group blacklists you permanently," Lily said simply. "You will have to survive entirely on your own merits. And we both know how that will end."

Ethan swallowed hard, his face turning bright red. He looked at his father, but Mark just nodded slowly, signaling him to accept it.

Lily turned back to Rachel, tapping her finger on the contract lying on the table.

"You have sixty seconds to sign the deed over to The Claire Foundation and accept the custodian contract, Aunt Rachel," Lily said, checking her gold wrist-watch. "If you refuse, my security team will escort you off the property immediately, and the sheriff will padlock the gates."

Rachel stared at the paper. Tears flowed freely down her cheeks, smearing her makeup. Her hand trembled violently as she reached out and picked up the silver Montblanc pen.

With a ragged, broken sob, she pressed the tip to the paper and signed her name.
