Chapter 1 - The Arrest on the Tarmac

The siren lights cut through the heavy evening fog settling over Portland International Airport. Detective Sarah Vance stood on the tarmac, surrounded by four armed officers, as the jet bridge doors hissed open. The flight from Honolulu had just taxied to the gate, and the passengers were spilling out into the terminal—unaware of the trap waiting for two specific travelers.

Dennis and Trisha walked off the plane wrapped in plush designer hoodies, holding hands, their skin carrying the golden tan of three sun-drenched days in Maui. Dennis held a wicker tote bag while Trisha laughed at something on her phone.

"Dennis Stanley? Trisha Stanley?" Detective Vance stepped forward, her badge pinned securely to her navy coat.

Dennis’s smile faltered instantly. His eyes darted toward the exit, but two officers immediately stepped into his path. "Dad sent you?" Dennis demanded, his voice instantly rising in pitch, turning sharp and defensive. "Look, officer, this is a private family misunderstanding! My father is an old man, he’s paranoid, he used to be in social services and sees abuse where there isn't any—"

"Save it for your attorney, Mr. Stanley," Vance interrupted coldly. "You and your wife are under arrest for first-degree felony child abandonment, criminal mistreatment, and unlawful imprisonment."

Trisha shrieked as an officer grabbed her wrists, pulling her hands behind her back. Her expensive sunglasses tumbled onto the carpeted floor. "Get your hands off me! I’m not her mother! I didn't do anything! It was his idea! He told me he took care of it!"

"Trisha, shut up!" Dennis roared, struggling against the handcuffs biting into his wrists. He glared directly at the body camera mounted on the detective’s vest. "You call my dad right now! Tell him to withdraw the charges! It’s his house! He can tell the police it was a mistake!"

"Your father isn't withdrawing anything," Detective Vance replied, pulling Dennis’s driver's license from his wallet. "In fact, Mr. Stanley, he just handed over four years of financial records, property deeds, and every frame of security footage you thought was deleted. You're not going home tonight."
