Chapter 2 - The Depths of the Secret

While Dennis and Trisha were processed into the county jail, I sat in the sterile pediatric room at Emanuel Children’s Hospital. The room was softly lit, pastel cartoon characters painted on the walls in an attempt to make the medical equipment look less intimidating.

Sophie sat in the center of the white mattress, her small legs crossed, eating a bowl of warm broth with agonizing slowness. Every time a nurse opened the door, Sophie’s shoulders pulled inward, her tiny frame tensing as if preparing for a blow or a harsh command to be quiet.

Dr. Aris Thorne, a leading child specialist, stepped out into the hallway with me. His face was grave as he flipped through her chart.

"Elmer," Dr. Thorne said quietly, his voice heavy with restraint. "The physical examination shows severe, long-term neglect. She weighs barely thirty pounds—the average weight of a three-year-old, not a child turning six. Her skin shows chronic vitamin deficiency, and her vocal cords are under-developed because she spent months being conditioned not to speak."

I pressed my back against the cold hospital wall, my hand trembling as I rubbed my forehead. "How long, Aris? How long was she in that house?"

"Based on bone density scans and old medical records we retrieved from a clinic across town," Dr. Thorne revealed, "Sophie was born six years ago to a woman named Clara Vance—a woman Dennis dated briefly before he met Trisha. Clara died in a car accident three years ago. When Clara passed, custody fell to Dennis."

He pulled out a printed report. "Instead of bringing her into his life, Dennis hid her. For the last eighteen months, since Trisha moved into your Portland property, Sophie was kept entirely in that attic room. Trisha didn't want a child from a previous relationship disrupting her image. So Dennis made his own daughter invisible."

The rage that washed over me was unlike anything I had felt in my forty years of working with abused children. My own blood—the boy I had raised, funded, and protected—had starved his own daughter to keep a roof over his head and a self-absorbed wife by his side.
