Chapter 8 - The Adoption

Spring returned to Portland, bringing blooming roses and warm sunshine.

On a bright Tuesday morning in May, I walked into the Family Law Court building holding Sophie’s hand. She was wearing a yellow sunshirt, white shoes, and a bright blue ribbon tied into her dark hair.

Rosa and Detective Vance walked alongside us, carrying armfuls of flowers and a large custom cake.

Judge Evelyn Ruiz sat behind the high judicial bench, smiling down at Sophie.

"Mr. Elmer Stanley," Judge Ruiz read from the legal petition on her desk. "You have applied for full, permanent legal adoption and name change for Sophie Vance Stanley."

"I have, Your Honor," I replied, standing proud beside the podium.

Judge Ruiz looked over at Sophie. "Sophie, do you understand what this meeting is about today?"

Sophie stepped forward, leaning her hands against the polished wooden rail. "It means Grandpa Elmer is my real dad now," she said clearly, her voice loud, confident, and devoid of any lingering fear. "And nobody can ever take me away from him."

Judge Ruiz’s eyes softened with genuine emotion. She picked up her pen and signed the thick parchment document before striking the gavel with a firm, joyful crack.

"By the power vested in me by the State of Oregon," Judge Ruiz announced, "I hereby declare Sophie officially adopted by Elmer Stanley. You are family, legally and forever."

The small courtroom erupted in applause. Rosa threw her arms around us, crying tears of joy, while Detective Vance handed Sophie a official toy police badge.
