Chapter 2 - The Audit of Betrayal

By midnight, the grand estate was empty. The lights on the terrace were shut off, the centerpieces packed away, and the ruined white rose garden lay quiet under the moonlight.
Inside the private executive boardroom of the flagship Hale Grand Hotel, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Catherine sat at the head of the mahogany table, dressed in a clean, navy-blue silk suit, her damp hair pulled back neatly. A small bandage covered a cut on her cheek where a thorn had grazed her during the fall, but her eyes were sharp, focused, and utterly merciless.
Jennifer sat to her left, diligently sorting through a mountain of financial files, while Elena Cho sat to her right with a team of four forensic accountants.
I stood by the window, watching the city lights, holding a warm cup of coffee that had gone cold an hour ago.
"We just finished scanning the central server's access logs," Elena reported, sliding a thick tablet across the table to Catherine. "The forgery of the merger document wasn't an isolated incident. Over the last six months, Trevor used his executive credentials to grant Madison unrestricted access to Hale Hospitality's internal accounts."
Jennifer gasped, dropping her highlighter. "What did she do?"
"She systematically funneled nearly three point five million dollars out of our development reserves," Elena explained grimly. "It was routed through a shell company registered in Delaware under her mother’s maiden name. The money was used to cover the initial debt payments for Prescott Development, keeping Paul's company afloat just long enough to complete the wedding and force the merger."
Catherine didn't flinch. She simply turned the page of the financial report.
"They didn't just want the merger," Catherine observed quietly. "They were draining us dry so that when the merger happened, Hale Hospitality would be forced to take on Prescott's debt to survive. They were going to bankrupt my company to save hers."
"And Trevor signed off on every single wire transfer," I said, turning away from the window to join them at the table. "He knew."
"He thought he was being a mastermind," Jennifer said angrily, her eyes red from crying over her brother's treason. "Madison convinced him that Dad and Mom were holding him back. She fed his ego until he believed he was the real brains behind the company."
The door to the boardroom opened, and my security chief, Hank, stepped in.
"Mr. and Mrs. Hale," Hank said respectfully. "Trevor is downstairs in the lobby. He's been begging to come up for two hours. He says he won't leave until he speaks with his mother."
Catherine didn't look up from her paperwork. "Tell him to go home, Hank."
"He says Madison is at her parents' house screaming at him, and he has nowhere else to go," Hank added. "He looks... bad, ma'am."
"He made his choice when he put his arm around the woman who threw his mother into the dirt," I told Hank firmly. "Tell him that if he steps foot on any Hale property again, I will have him arrested for trespassing."
"Wait," Catherine said, raising her hand.
I looked at my wife, fearing for a second that her mother's heart was softening. But when I saw the expression on her face, I realized I had underestimated her.
"Let him come up," Catherine said flatly. "Alone."
Five minutes later, Trevor walked into the boardroom.
He was still wearing his tuxedo trousers, but he had stripped off his jacket and bow tie. His shirt was rumpled, his hair was a mess, and his eyes were swollen with tears. He looked like a frightened child, a stark contrast to the arrogant young executive who had sneered on the terrace hours earlier.
"Mom... Dad..." Trevor stammered, taking a hesitant step toward the table. "Please. You have to listen to me. Madison... she manipulated everything. She told me the merger was the only way to expand into the luxury resort market. She swore to me that you were planning to sell the company to an outside equity firm!"
"And you believed her instead of asking us?" I asked, my voice dangerously low. "You've known us your entire life, Trevor."
"She... she was my wife! I was trying to impress her!" Trevor sobbed, dropping to his knees beside Catherine’s chair. He reached out to grasp her hands. "Mom, please. I made a mistake. A terrible, stupid mistake. I'll divorce her tomorrow! I'll annul the marriage! Just please... don't take away my position. Don't throw me out of the family!"
Catherine looked down at her son kneeling at her feet. Slowly, she pulled her hands back, placing them neatly in her lap, far out of his reach.
"You didn't make a mistake, Trevor," Catherine said softly. "A mistake is a miscalculated balance sheet or a missed appointment. What you did was an act of deliberate, calculated malice born out of greed."
"Mom—"
"You stood over me while I was bleeding in the mud," Catherine continued, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "You didn't care if I was hurt. You didn't care about my dignity. You only cared about asserting your dominance. You wanted me broken so I would sign your paper."
She stood up, looking down at him.
"Effective immediately, your trust fund is revoked," Catherine declared. "Your corporate credit cards are canceled. Your company car has been impounded. The penthouse apartment you live in is owned by Hale Hospitality, and you have until 9:00 AM tomorrow to clear your personal belongings out."

Trevor stared at her in utter disbelief. "Mom... you're... you're stripping me of everything? How am I supposed to live?!"
"The same way your father and I started," Catherine replied coldly. "By working for it. Get out of my sight."
