Chapter 7 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

A year after the wedding incident, the North Shore Resort finally held its grand opening.
It was a magnificent autumn evening. The grand wooden lodge, overlooking the crystal-clear waters of the lake, was lit with warm golden lights. Hundreds of guests—this time real partners, honest investors, and true friends—gathered on the massive outdoor deck to celebrate the launch of Hale Hospitality's proudest achievement.
Jennifer had been officially promoted to Vice President of Corporate Strategy, showing a brilliant, sharp leadership style that mirrored her mother’s best qualities without any of Trevor’s arrogance.
I stood near the stone fireplace, drinking a glass of cider, watching Catherine mingle with the guests. She looked stunning in an emerald green gown, her laughter light and free, completely healed from the trauma of that dark afternoon.
Elena Cho walked over to me, holding a soft drink.
"Great turnout, Ray," Elena smiled. "The board is thrilled. Stock prices hit an all-time high this morning."
"Thanks to you, Elena," I said, clinking my glass against hers. "We couldn't have survived the legal battle without you."
"Speaking of legal matters," Elena said, her voice dropping into a lower register. "I received a letter from Trevor’s probation officer today."
I raised an eyebrow. "How is he?"
"He's living in a small one-bedroom apartment in upstate New York," Elena revealed. "He's working as an assistant manager at a local hardware store, fulfilling his community service hours on weekends at a youth center. His probation officer says he hasn't missed a single day, hasn't complained once, and pays a small portion of his salary toward his court restitution every month."
I took a slow sip of my cider, feeling a strange mix of sadness and quiet relief. "Is he... okay?"
"He's quiet," Elena said gently. "His officer says he keeps a news clipping of Catherine’s North Shore opening on his small dining table. He told the officer he just wants his mother to know he's trying to change."
I looked across the room at Catherine, who was laughing with Jennifer near the grand entrance.
"Does Catherine know?" I asked.

"I haven't told her," Elena admitted. "I wanted to check with you first."
"Don't tell her yet," I advised softly. "Let her enjoy tonight. She earned this peace."
