Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

The news broke on a Tuesday morning with the suddenness of a lightning strike.
Federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants at the headquarters of Prescott Development, the private residence of Paul Prescott, and the offices of the District Zoning Committee.
Live television cameras captured the moment Paul Prescott was led out of his mansion in handcuffs, charged with federal racketeering, bank fraud, and systematic public corruption. His brother, the district board chairman, was arrested at his desk only minutes later.
Inside the Prescott mansion, chaos reigned.
Madison stood in the grand foyer, watching federal officers haul away computers, filing cabinets, and safe boxes. Her mother was weeping hysterically on the sofa, while Trevor sat on the stairs, his head in his hands, staring blankly at the floor.
"Do something, Trevor!" Madison screamed, running over to him and grabbing his collar. "Your mother did this! She leaked those files! Call her! Tell her to drop the charges!"
Trevor looked up at her, his eyes totally hollow. "Drop the charges? Madison, it's the federal government. You can't just 'drop' federal racketeering charges. My mother didn't just defeat us... she destroyed us."
"We can still fight!" Madison insisted, her face contorted with desperation. "We still have the civil suit! We can prove she's incompetent!"
Before Trevor could answer, the front door opened, and two uniformed police officers stepped inside, accompanied by Elena Cho.
"Madison Prescott?" the lead officer asked.
Madison froze, letting go of Trevor's shirt. "Yes?"
"You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate forgery, and second-degree physical assault," the officer declared, stepping forward with handcuffs outstretched.
"Assault?!" Madison shrieked, backing away. "I didn't assault anyone! She fell!"
"We have two hundred witnesses, high-definition security footage, and a hospital medical report detailing the severe bruising and joint sprain suffered by Mrs. Catherine Hale," Elena Cho said calmly from the doorway. "And as for the forgery and larceny, your shell company in Delaware was seized two hours ago by the state prosecutor. Every dollar you stole from Hale Hospitality has been traced directly to your personal bank accounts."
"Trevor!" Madison screamed as the officer snapped the cold metal handcuffs around her wrists. "Trevor, help me! Tell them I didn't do it! Tell them it was your idea!"
Trevor stood up slowly on the stairs, looking at the woman he had ruined his life for.
"No, Madison," Trevor said, his voice flat and dead. "It was yours. It was always yours."
"You coward!" Madison spat, thrashing wildly as the officers pulled her toward the door. "You pathetic, worthless little boy! You're nothing without your daddy's money! You hear me?! Nothing!"
Her screams faded as she was forced into the back of a police cruiser, leaving the mansion in total, suffocating silence.
Trevor stood alone on the stairs. He looked around the empty, ruined hallway. Then he pulled his phone from his pocket. It was his last remaining working device, paid for by a prepaid card he had bought with spare cash.
He dialed my number.
I answered on the second ring. "Hello, Trevor."
"Dad..." Trevor choked out, collapsing onto the stairs as tears streamed down his face. "They took Madison. Paul is in jail. I... I have nothing left. I'm so sorry. Please, Dad... please let me come home."
I stood on the balcony of our flagship hotel, looking out at the serene waters of the lake. Beside me stood Catherine, holding my hand.
"You can't come home, Trevor," I said quietly into the phone. "Because the home you knew doesn't exist anymore. You burned it down yourself."
"Dad, please!" he begged, sobbing openly now. "I'm your son!"

"A son does not laugh while his mother bleeds in the dirt," I told him. "You will face the court for your role in the financial fraud. If you plead guilty and cooperate with the prosecutors, Elena will advise the judge to spare you prison time. But as for this family... you are on your own."
I hung up the phone and turned it off.
