Chapter 2 - The Resort Intrusion

In Orlando, the sun was bright, but the mood at the villa was, for the first time, not quite as picture-perfect as Lauren had envisioned.

Daniel was lounging by the pool when his phone began to vibrate incessantly. He ignored it until the third call from an unfamiliar, stern-sounding number.

"Yes?" he snapped, expecting the resort staff.

"Mr. Daniel Harper?" the voice on the other end was clipped and authoritative. "You are being served. Please stay exactly where you are."

Within minutes, a man in a crisp suit approached him. He handed Daniel a thick, heavy envelope. It wasn't just a divorce notice or a custody dispute; it was a emergency petition for temporary guardianship, citing child abandonment and criminal neglect.

Lauren walked up, holding a tray of drinks, her smile plastered on her face. "Dan, the kids are waiting at the—"

She stopped when she saw the man in the suit and the look of absolute horror on her husband’s face. She looked at the envelope. Her name was on the second copy, attached to a motion for a temporary restraining order, preventing them from leaving the state until a hearing was conducted.

"What is this?" she screeched, her voice losing its polished veneer.

"It’s from Mom," Daniel said, his voice a whisper. "She called the police. She called the courts. Noah is safe with her, and she... she’s suing for full custody."

Lauren laughed, but it was a nervous, jagged sound. "She’s a retired teacher, Dan. She can’t take our son. Don't be dramatic."

"She’s not being dramatic, Lauren," Daniel said, his hands shaking as he read the list of charges. "She has proof. She has the text messages. She has the recordings. She has dates and times of every time you excluded him. She’s turned the state of Ohio against us."

The resort staff began to look over. The "perfect" family was now the subject of whispers. The vacation was officially over.
