Chapter 9 - The Final Hearing

The day of the permanent custody hearing, I was prepared to fight to the end. But when we arrived at the courthouse, Daniel stood up.

"Your Honor," he said, his voice firm. "I believe Noah should stay with his grandmother. I am not in a place where I can provide the stability he needs, and she has been the only parent he has truly known in this process."

The magistrate looked surprised. Lauren was nowhere to be found.

I looked at my son. I saw a glimpse of the man he was supposed to be.

The magistrate ruled in my favor. I was granted permanent legal custody, with visitation rights for Daniel that would only be enacted if Noah chose to participate.

We walked out of the courthouse together. The air was fresh. The sun was shining.
