Chapter 5 - The Fallout

The aftermath of the hearing was swift.
The magistrate awarded me temporary legal guardianship of Noah. Daniel and Lauren were permitted supervised visitation, but they had to undergo mandatory parenting classes and a psychiatric evaluation.
The news had rippled through our community. The "perfect" family was now a pariah. Lauren’s job in real estate suffered when the story of the airport incident became common knowledge. Daniel was placed on administrative leave at his firm, pending an investigation into his "personal character."
I didn't care about their public image. I cared about Noah.
He was beginning to sleep through the night. He was eating better. He was starting to smile again—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes.
"Grandma?" he asked one night as we sat on the porch. "Do I have to go to the visitation?"
"Not if you don't want to, Noah," I said. "This is your life. You get to choose who gets to be in it."
