Chapter 5 - The Glass Mask

The Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was a sea of glittering chandeliers, black-tie suits, haute couture gowns, and clinking champagne flutes.

New York’s most influential elite—politicians, hedge fund titans, and media moguls—gathered beneath the soaring stone arches.

When Damian Vale entered the hall with me on his arm, the ambient chatter of five hundred high-society guests dropped into a sudden, stunned hush. Cameras flashed instantly from the press balcony above.

"Look at them," I whispered softly, keeping my smile composed as we glided across the marble floor. "They look like sharks scenting blood."

"Let them look," Damian murmured, squeezing my hand gently where it rested on his forearm. "They’re staring because they’ve never seen me bring a partner to an official event in ten years."

Across the grand ballroom, near a towering floral arrangement, stood Richard Sterling.

He was sipping scotch from a crystal tumbler, surrounded by three Aegis board members. When his eyes landed on me, his face underwent a terrifying transformation—from smug arrogance to pure, unadulterated venom.

He excused himself sharply and began marching across the floor directly toward us, his polished shoes clicking aggressively against the stone.

"Nora!" Richard barked as he reached us, ignoring Damian entirely. "What is the meaning of this outrage? How dare you show your face here after discarding your family duties?!"

I stood tall, lifting my head with effortless grace, feeling the solid, unbreakable weight of Damian’s presence beside me.

"Hello, Richard," I said, my voice cool, clear, and perfectly carrying across the surrounding circle of curious onlookers. "I see your health hasn't improved. You still sound as bitter as the day I revoked your executive access to my mother’s estate."

Richard’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. "You ungrateful little brat! I raised you! I protected your father’s name!"

"You stole my father’s name," I countered, pulling a sleek, silver encrypted flash drive from my emerald clutch bag and holding it up between us. "And inside this drive are the original, uncorrupted server logs from the 2018 Cambridge trials—proving you falsified thirty million dollars in clinical data to secure your board seat at Sterling Pharma."

Richard froze. His eyes locked onto the silver drive, his breath catching in his throat.

"You... you wouldn't," he stammered, his confidence evaporating like mist. "If you leak that, the family stock collapses!"

"It isn't my family stock, Richard," I said, my voice cutting like a razor. "It’s a criminal enterprise built on lies. And I’ve already delivered copies of these files to the Chairman of the Aegis Board and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission ten minutes ago."

At that exact moment, two men in sharp grey suits accompanied by four uniformed NYPD officers stepped through the museum’s main entrance, walking with purpose toward our group.

Richard turned around, his eyes widening in pure terror as the lead officer displayed a federal arrest warrant.

"Richard Sterling," the lead agent declared loudly, his voice echoing across the silent ballroom. "You are under arrest for federal securities fraud, corporate espionage, and attempted witness intimidation. You have the right to remain silent."

As the officers snapped handcuffs around Richard’s wrists and led him out through the grand glass doors of the museum, the entire ballroom broke into quiet, dramatic murmurs.

Damian looked down at me, his dark eyes glowing with immense, quiet pride.

"You handled that brilliantly, Miss Hayes," Damian whispered, his hand resting securely against the small of my back.

"I didn't do it alone," I smiled, looking up at him as the heavy weight of a ten-year shadow finally lifted from my heart forever. "I had a very powerful broker on my side."
