Chapter 6 - The Shadows Strike Back

Victory, however, often breeds desperation in cornered beasts.

While Richard Sterling was being processed at the Manhattan Federal Detention Center, his corrupt Chief Operating Officer—a ruthless mercenary named Victor Vance—realized that Richard’s arrest would trigger an immediate audit of their offshore operations in Panama.

At 11:30 p.m. that same night, as our armored sedan was driving us back from the gala toward Vale Tower, a sudden, heavy metallic crunch echoed through the cabin.

A black heavy-duty pickup truck rammed our rear bumper, forcing our sedan off the West Side Highway near an isolated industrial pier along the Hudson River.

Our sedan spun out, its tires screeching against the wet asphalt, slamming sideways against a row of rusted shipping containers before coming to a violent halt.

"Nora! Down!" Damian roared, throwing his body over mine to shield me as glass shattered across the cabin.

Outside, rain poured heavily. The driver, one of Adrian’s top tactical operatives, was rendered unconscious by the airbag deployment.

Three armed men in dark tactical gear leaped out of the pickup truck, raising automatic weapons as they approached our vehicle.

"They aren't here to negotiate, Damian!" I gasped, wiping a thin trickle of blood from my forehead where a stray piece of glass had grazed my skin.

"Stay beneath the dashboard!" Damian ordered, his voice laced with terrifying, ancient power. He pulled a compact pistol from his shoulder holster, cracked his door open, and fired three rapid, precise shots through the rain, forcing the attackers to dive for cover behind the shipping containers.

Suddenly, a massive, dark silhouette burst out from the rear trunk compartment of our vehicle.

During our departure from the gala, Adrian had secretly transported Atlas in the enlarged, climate-controlled rear cargo section of our armored SUV—a precaution Damian insisted upon whenever high-tier threats were active.

Atlas didn't hesitate.

The giant ninety-pound Mastiff let out a terrifying, bone-chilling roar that echoed across the stormy river pier. He lunged through the rain like a dark mythological beast, slamming his massive chest into the lead mercenary, knocking the weapon from his hands and pinning him against the wet pavement.

"Atlas! No!" I screamed, pushing my door open and scrambling out into the pouring rain, ignoring the danger.

The second mercenary turned his weapon toward the dog.

"Don't touch him!" Damian shouted, stepping out into the open, taking two rapid shots that struck the second attacker’s shoulder, disabling him instantly.

Within ninety seconds, the sound of blaring police sirens echoed down the highway as four of Adrian’s backup security vehicles screeched onto the pier, surrounding the remaining attackers with high-powered spotlight beams.

Adrian sprinted out of the lead backup vehicle, weapon drawn, securing the perimeter within seconds.

I dropped to my knees on the wet asphalt, pulling Atlas into my arms. The giant dog was panting heavily, his coat soaked with rain, but he wasn't hurt. He immediately began licking the blood from my forehead, whining with deep, protective concern.

Damian walked over, dropping his weapon into Adrian’s hands. He fell to his knees in the rain right beside me, wrapping his massive arms around both me and Atlas, pulling us tightly against his chest.

His body was shaking—not with fear for himself, but with raw, unadulterated terror at the thought of losing us.

"Nora... Nora, look at me," Damian pleaded, his hands framing my face, his dark eyes searching mine with frantic devotion. "Are you alright? Tell me you’re alright!"

"I’m okay, Damian," I sobbed, laughing through my tears as the rain washed over us. "I’m okay. Atlas saved us."

Damian pressed his forehead against mine, his warm breath mingling with the cold night rain.

"I love you," Damian whispered softly, the three words cutting through the sound of the thunder and the rain. "I love you, Nora. I swear on my life, no one will ever touch you again."

May you like

I reached up, my rain-soaked fingers tangling in his dark hair, pulling his face down to mine.

"I love you too, Damian," I answered, pressing my lips against his in a sweet, passionate, and rain-soaked kiss that sealed our fate forever.
