Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Pier

The sanctuary garden was quiet, filled with the gentle fragrance of blooming lilacs and the soft sound of water lapping against the stone pier.

The Manhattan skyline rose in the distance, bathed in the golden, warm light of the late afternoon sun.

Atlas walked beside us, sniffing curious sparrows that fluttered among the flowerbeds, before settling down on a soft patch of green grass near the water’s edge.

Damian stopped near the edge of the pier, pulling me around to face him.

"Nine months ago," Damian began softly, his voice trembling with a rare, beautiful vulnerability, "a young woman walked into my penthouse at midnight with overdue rent, no formal veterinary degree, and three quiet words that saved my dog's life."

I smiled, my eyes shimmering with happy tears. "I remember."

"I thought I owned everything in this city, Nora," Damian continued, taking a deep, emotional breath. "I had power, wealth, and a reputation that kept the entire world at a distance. But my life was as empty and silent as this penthouse before you arrived. You brought light into my house. You brought healing to Atlas. And you taught me what it truly means to trust another human being."

He slowly dropped down onto one knee against the stone pier.

I gasped, covering my mouth with both hands as happy tears spilled freely down my cheeks.

Damian pulled the velvet box from his pocket and opened it. Inside rested a breathtaking, flawless six-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, flanked by two delicate platinum bands that shimmered like starlight in the sun.

"Nora Hayes," Damian said, his dark eyes looking up into mine with absolute, unconditional love. "You are my equal, my partner, my best friend, and the love of my life. Will you marry me?"

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes!" I sobbed happily, dropping to my knees right beside him on the pier, wrapping my arms around his neck and kissing him deeply as the golden sun set over the Hudson River. "Yes, Damian! A thousand times yes!"

Damian laughed joyfully, slipping the diamond ring onto my finger before pulling me into a fierce, passionate embrace.

Atlas trotted over, let out a loud, triumphant bark, and rested his massive head right between us, pushing his dark nose against our joined hands.
