Chapter 8 - The Foundation

Six months later, spring transformed New York City into a lush paradise of green leaves and blooming cherry blossoms.

The Hayes Foundation for Animal Rehabilitation opened its main facility in a renovated, state-of-the-art brick complex along the Brooklyn waterfront—the very neighborhood where I had once worked night shifts for minimum wage.

The facility featured indoor agility parks, hyperbaric oxygen suites for injured service animals, a dedicated trauma recovery center, and a quiet sanctuary garden overlooking the East River.

On opening day, hundreds of local residents, shelter volunteers, and veterinary specialists gathered in the courtyard for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

I stood on the small wooden stage wearing a lovely floral summer dress. Beside me stood Atlas—wearing an official silk bandana that read CHIEF MORALE OFFICER—wagging his heavy tail happily as children from the neighborhood lined up to pet his broad, soft head.

"He’s entirely famous now, you know," Adrian joked, stepping up onto the stage beside me, holding a clipboard. "We’ve received four television requests asking for Atlas to appear on morning talk shows."

I laughed, stroking Atlas’s ears. "Tell them he only accepts payment in organic beef broth and belly rubs."

Damian walked up the stage steps, looking exceptionally relaxed in a tailored navy blazer and open-collar shirt. He carried a small velvet box in his jacket pocket, his eyes glowing with an emotion so deep and pure it made my chest ache with happiness.

He walked over to me, taking both my hands in his.

"You built something incredible here, Nora," Damian said softly, looking out over the bustling, joyful courtyard. "Look at what you did."

"We did it," I corrected softly, looking up into his eyes. "You gave me the resources, Damian. But more than that... you gave me a place where I didn't have to hide."

May you like

Damian smiled, a quiet, breathtaking expression that transformed his formidable face into absolute warmth.

"Come with me," he murmured, taking my hand and leading me away from the crowd toward the quiet sanctuary garden at the end of the pier.
