Chapter 2 - The Rules of the Fortress

The Rinaldi estate in North Shore, Long Island, was less of a home and more of a private fortress. Surrounding the twenty-acre property were ten-foot stone walls, infrared security cameras, and broad-shouldered men in tailored dark suits who carried hidden sidearms and spoke only into earpieces.

The next morning at six forty-five, Serena pulled her sputtering ten-year-old sedan through the wrought-iron gates. Beside her in the passenger seat sat Lucia.

Lucia was seven, with dark curly hair, her mother’s perceptive eyes, and a small backpack clutched tightly against her chest. She had spent the last two years moving between cramped studio apartments while Serena worked two jobs to pay off medical debts left behind by her ex-fiancé, Julian.

"Is this a castle, Mommy?" Lucia whispered, staring up at the massive limestone mansion.

"Something like that, sweetie," Serena said, turning off the ignition. "Remember what we talked about? We are guests here. Mr. Rinaldi is my boss, and his boys can be... a little wild."

"Are they mean?"

"They’re just sad," Serena said softly, remembering the complete absence of family photographs in the grand kitchen the night before. "Sad people sometimes make a lot of noise so they don't have to hear the quiet."

When the front door opened, it wasn't the tired housekeeper who greeted them. It was Victor himself.

He wore a dark charcoal suit, his tie loosened, holding a file folder. His eyes swept over Serena, noting her fresh black trousers and neat white blouse, before settling on the little girl hiding behind her leg.

Victor knelt down. The gesture was surprisingly natural for a man whose name made street captains tremble.

"You must be Lucia," Victor said, his voice dropping an octave.

Lucia peeked out from behind Serena. "Are you the king?"

A rare, low chuckle escaped Victor’s throat. "No, Lucia. I’m just the man who owns the house. Your mother tells me you like books."

Lucia nodded timidly.

Victor pointed down the grand hallway toward two massive mahogany doors. "Third room on the left is the library. It has six thousand books. You can read any of them you want. Except the ones on the top shelf—those are boring tax ledgers."

Lucia’s eyes lit up like Christmas lights. She looked up at Serena, who gave her a gentle nod. "Go explore, sweetie. Stay where the guards can see you."

As Lucia scampered down the hall, Victor stood up, his relaxed expression instantly vanishing into cold professionalism.

"We need to discuss terms, Miss Valente," Victor said, gesturing toward his private study.

Serena followed him inside. The room smelled of polished mahogany, expensive tobacco, and rain. A heavy glass desk sat in the center, stacked with legal documents and encrypted tablets.

"First," Victor began, leaning against the edge of his desk, "your daughter’s presence here is a calculated risk. My family has enemies. The Rinaldi name carries a high price in New York."

"I saw the guards at the gate," Serena noted.

"Those guards answer to my head of security, Frankie," Victor said. "From this moment on, you and Lucia are under full estate protection. That means no leaving the grounds without an escort. No unvetted visitors."

"I have a custody hearing in twelve days," Serena stated firmly. "I have to attend court in Manhattan."

"You will attend," Victor promised. "In my car. With my legal team sitting behind you."

Serena blinked, caught off guard. "Your legal team?"

Victor took a step closer, his dark eyes searching her face. "Julian Vance—your ex-fiancé. I had Frankie run a background check on him last night."

Serena’s stomach tightened. "Mr. Rinaldi, my personal life—"

"Julian Vance is a low-level associate for the Moretti family," Victor interrupted, his tone turning into pure ice. "He didn't file for custody of Lucia because he wants to be a father. He filed because his boss, Dominic Moretti, discovered you were applying for the nanny position at my estate. They wanted a weapon inside my walls."

Serena felt the air drain from her lungs. She gripped the back of a leather armchair to steady herself. "Julian... he's using our daughter?"

May you like

"He tried to," Victor said quietly. "He doesn't know you signed the contract last night. Now, you belong to the Rinaldi estate. And no one takes what belongs to this house."

Before Serena could process the terrifying revelation, a loud explosion echoed from the upper floor, followed by the blare of a smoke alarm.
